Leaving vehicle at port after cruise

We have never parked at the port before, but plan to this time. Do we have to jump in our vehicle and leave immediately after our cruise? We have a few things we would like to do within walking distance of the port, so we'd like to drop our luggage in the car and set off on foot for a few hours, is this possible? I don't mind paying an extra days fee. It would be worth it not to have to leave and deal with traffic and search for another place to park.

If you are using the Fulton St deck, I don't see how they would know. They charge per day, but I seriously doubt there is any attempt made to force people out when they get back. They want a full deck to make more money, and the longer you park there the more they make.
