BeccaH Posted December 1, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 1, 2013 Anyone have any recent experience renting scooters in Freeport or Nassau? Heading out in 5 days Thanks, becca
KOOLBEANS Posted December 1, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 1, 2013 I wouldn't do it at any port period. Too many years of reading the problems with accidents and insurance and injuries, no way. Vacation is for fun, don't take the gamble IMO. Be safe and find another method of getting around.
scubagirrl Posted December 1, 2013 #3 Share Posted December 1, 2013 Anyone have any recent experience renting scooters in Freeport or Nassau? Heading out in 5 daysThanks, becca EVERY DAY we see serious accidents here in nassau. Roads are in disrepair, traffic is horrendous, potholes and roundabouts are the norm and there are very few lights and roadsigns. At least once or twice a day we see tourist being scraped off the roads. Freeport would be a better place to do this.
BeccaH Posted December 1, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted December 1, 2013 My husband and i both have motorcycle endorsements on our licenses and we both ride... We REALLY enjoy riding and seeing scenery that way. Looking to see if anyone has personal experience renting/riding in Nassau or Freeport. (Thinking about it more for Freeport though). ~becca

bobsfamily Posted December 1, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 1, 2013 (edited) Nassau would be a accident waiting to happen... Freeport has lots of empty roads outside of the "town". Riding to the east end (or west end) can be a real experience and you will see the "real" Bahamas. One note of caution, people have been robbed/mugged/worse on some of the deserted beaches. Here is a list of rental places for cars which also rent motorbikes: The local offices of the rental car companies can be reached by calling the following numbers: Avis Rent-A-Car: (242) 352-7666 Bahama Buggies: (242) 351-7285 Cartwright’s Rent-A-Car: (242) 351-3002 Dollar Rent-A-Car: (242) 352-9325 Econo Car & Motorbike Rental: (242) 351-6700 Hertz Rent-A-Car: (242) 352-3297 KSR Car Rental: (242) 351-5737 Thrifty Car Rental: (242) 352-9308 Motorbikes can also be rented for about half the price of a car. Driver’s licenses are required for these vehicles, and all passengers must wear helmets. I would suggest renting a real motorcycle rather than a scooter. If renting either you can go towards the west end and visit Paradise Cove or goes towards the east end and visit Bishop's for the best conch fritters and a bar right on the beach (nice beach). The ride to the east end is 60 plus miles each way. Directions to east end: https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Unknown+road&daddr=Grand+Bahama+Hwy&hl=en&ll=26.536937,-78.186951&spn=1.008674,1.783905&sll=26.654133,-77.980399&sspn=0.031489,0.055747&geocode=FTailAEd-ABO-w%3BFWm1lgEdVEFa-w&mra=dme&mrsp=1&sz=15&t=m&z=10 Directions to Paradise Cove - about 15 miles (towards west end): https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Unknown+road&daddr=Grand+Bahama+Hwy&hl=en&ll=26.536937,-78.186951&spn=1.008674,1.783905&sll=26.654133,-77.980399&sspn=0.031489,0.055747&geocode=FTailAEd-ABO-w%3BFWm1lgEdVEFa-w&mra=dme&mrsp=1&sz=15&t=m&z=10 Both Paradise Cove and Bishops would be safe to stop at along with Lucayan National Park/Gold Rock beach (on the road to the east end) Have a wonderful cruise and PLEASE heed ScubaGirl - Don't rent in Nassau....
