Hammerfest in early March - DIY or Hurtigruten Tour?

We're off to the travel agent tomorrow to finalise everything there & were wondering if a tour of Hammerfest was worth adding to our excursion list or whether it's easy enough to see the town on your own. There's only an hour or so to spare and we really don't have any ideas of how to fill in that time. Maybe staying on board ship might be the best bet? Any suggestions?

Walk straight forward away from the dock and turn right onto the main street. Walk up the hill to the (lovely) little church and go inside. Come back out, walk behind the church (careful, snow may hide the steps) to go down to the cliff-edge road and turn right. Once you get to the road into the port, turn left and stop off at the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society on the left. Enjoy a boiled sweet just inside the doorway and move inside to have a look around.

That should occupy your time in Hammerfest.

Glad to have helped!

We took three Hurtigruten excursions this last October:

- Nord Kaap was pretty interesting. The drive out and back provided a good insight into the landscape and people (we had a superb guide who rattled things off in near perfect English and French with plenty of amusing asides). Nord Kaap was experiencing a near blizzard so we didn't get much of a view. Still enjoyed it, though!

- Russian border from Kirkenes. There didn't seem to be much to see in Kirkenes but the trip to the border was interesting in terms of landscape and cultural insights: in one town the youth had a bad habit of destroying the wooden bus shelter so the authorities replaced it with an upturned 8(?) tonne excavator bucket. Result!

- sea eagle safari in Trollfjord. This was amazing! The 'last' trip had been run on the previous voyage but the excursions manager persuaded the provider to run 'just one more' as the weather and light were so good. Let's just say she made a good call. Unfortunately, you won't be able to take it on your trip.
