I'm considering taking a NC for the first time, but was a little concerned with "hidden fees" that i've read about on blogs. I was especially with one that I read that housekeeping isn't included, how much truth is this? What are some of the "hidden fees" that you have encountered? Thanks in advance

Here is link to NCL what does my cruise fare include

Here is NCL statement regarding daily service charge

Service Charges: We are confident that you will enjoy your Freestyle Cruising experience and that our entire crew will provide you with the standard of service for which we are known. A $ 12.00 discretionary service charge will be automatically added per guest per day (for guests three years and older) to your shipboard account for all staterooms. This charge will be shared among those staff members, including the restaurant staff, stateroom stewards and other behind-the-scenes staff who provide services that enhance your overall cruise experience. If you have any concerns about the service you receive during your cruise, please let our Guest Services Desk staff know right away so we can address any issues in a timely manner.

Just a bit of advice - don't believe everything you read in blogs. Of course, housekeeping is included. There are many opportunities you will have to spend extra $$$ but you don't need to if you don't want to. There are specialty restaurants, alcohol, casino, etc. that cost extra but you can choose not to do any of them and still have a wonderful trip. I have not ever experienced any hidden fees. Do a little research and have a wonderful cruise if you decide to book.

Here is link to the NCL Dining guide ....

Some people say you need to eat in specialty restaurants because main restaurant food is sub par. We have not found that to be the case but do enjoy an occasional specialty meal and love the many options Norwegian provides.

Pretty much everything is included in your fare (see your documents) on NCL as any other cruise line! Alcohol is not included, neither are the Daily Service Charges....but as for housekeeping....definitely included! Some people whine about "nickel and diming" on the boards but trust me, you can go an entire cruise without some much as paying one extra penny! It's all up to what YOU want to spend extra money on!

Yes, there are some for-fee restaurants on each ship, but you don't HAVE to eat there!

Yes, there are Bingo cards to buy, but you don't HAVE to buy them unless you want to play.

Yes, there is a casino on the ship.....are you seeing a trend here?

Just go and have a great time.....🚢

I've never encountered a "hidden fee" on NCL and of course housekeeping in included. I'd be curious to see a sample of the blogs you read this on

NCL has the same charges as CCL...

Casino

Bingo cards

for fee restaurants

alcohol

daily service charge

soda

excursions

etc etc etc

This goes back to the old "nickle and dime" rants that show up here periodically. NCL doesn't charge for anything that any other cruise line doesn't. Some people think there fare should include everything.

NCL charges $12.00 per day per person for gratuities, pretty much the same as everyone else.

NCL charges for soft drinks, bottled water, beer, liquor and specialty coffees, jist like others.

NCL charges for specialty restaurants. Same as others, but no one says you have to eat there.

NCL charges for photos, gift purchases and excursions. Everyone else does.

They charge for spa amenities and so do others.

That pretty much covers it. So where are the hidden fees? Maybe when they pass the hat to fill the fuel tanks in the middle of the cruise

As all the others have said, you can walk on board your ship with nothing but your room card in hand, not having a penny of cash on you, and have a wonderful cruise, eating a huge variety of very good food, enjoy the variety of entertainment and shows that are provided. And when the cruise is over, the only additional charge you will see on your final statement will be the $12 per day service charge. Anything more you spend will be strictly up to you....not at all required for a great cruise.

Don't think there are any "hidden fees". There is your fare, port charges, taxes and daily service charge. Other than that nothing is hidden, if you want it (alcohol, sodas, specialty dining, spa treatments, some activities, etc.), you would pay extra for them, but the prices are not hidden. If you are on a budget, you could cruise nicely just paying your fare, port charges, taxes and daily service charge.

NCL is ala carte cruising". Pay extra for extras of your choosing. Love it.

I agree - I'd much rather pay a lower ticket price and be able to choose the extra amenities that are important to me than pay a higher ticket price and have access to a bunch of extras that I wouldn't use and don't care about.

Thanks everyone, sounds like NCL is like the rest, which is a good thing. :) I expect to pay gratuities maybe those other people had never cruised before.

I could also imagine some of those blog writers are loyal to other cruise lines or they just aren't fond/understanding of freestyle

Totally agree. I couldn't of said it better!

Relax and enjoy

Safe sailing

Any reasonably intelligent traveler who spends just a little time on NCL.com and cruise forums such as this will know exactly what to expect out of their vacation money wise. It ain't rocket science.

(not directed at anyone in particular for you sensitive folks) ;)

I know all ships kindly include "tipping" service charges...though not really hidden, it is an imposed fee..in which case, include it in with my rate...I understand the need to encompass the service staff, as I lived off tips in my earlier days.

I would be curious to see the allocation of the monies spread out and to whom the 12 dollars goes to.

As I understand it, the money collected in the DSC is shared between the hotel & restaurant staff, not including (I believe) officers and managers. Just the worker bees.

If you're cruising in a suite, please realize that your butler and concierge do not benefit from the DSC. You should tip them separately if you choose.
