Freedom of the seas in Alaska

Recommended Posts

Not until the Panama Canal is widened & lenghtened. As of right now the Freedom of the Seas is too big for the Panama Canal.

If Freedom or Independence moves to Alaska, it will most likely go the same route Celebrity Solstice went when she was moved. Via Europe/Asia and Australia.

Yeah, no - again, I'll mention the Flow Rider, which would be absolutely wasted on an Alaskan itinerary. It'll never happen.

The Flow rider doesn't get used when the Indy was in Europe during winter so no loss there. It'll most likely get more use in South Pacific itineraries, if Indy or Freedom do in fact replace Rhapsody down under as well.

If the Freedom goes down under, how will they keep people from falling out of the Flowrider (as it will now be upside down)?

What are the differences between freedom class and solstice in terms of demensions?

The Solstice is 121,878 GT with 1033ft length, 121 ft beam and 27 feet draft

freedom and Independence OTS are both 154,407 GT with 1112ft length, 126ft beam and 28ft draft.

so Freedom / Indy would be slightly larger than the Solstice.

I always wonder if any Voyager Class Ships will go to Alaska

Hello everyone,

Here's some up to date info on the Panama Canal and the possibilities (or lack thereof) regarding Voyager Class ships and larger coming through:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=40919183#post40919183

Bottom Line is that while the new locks can fit both Voyager and Freedom Class Ships, there is no way possible at all that they wll fit under the bridge of Americas at the Pacific side of the Canal. However, they will be able to do a partial transit itinerary through the Gatun Locks to Gatun Lake and back in to the Caribbean... Holland and Princess already do this itinerary.

The next step will be to actually get the locks built... imho no way in hell they get completed within the next 2 years, but that's just my opinion.

Voyager/Freedom Class in Alaska would be awesome! But this discussion of ships taking over for Rhapsody have been discussed over the last couple of months. From various people sleuthing out cruise ship port schedules for summer 2015, it was discovered that the Jewel is calling Los Angeles and Catalina Island in October 2015.

Here's the Jewel thread form a couple of weeks ago, an interesting read:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1955778

This solidfies the thoughts of previous posts and "guesses" of ships... Majority thought no way Freedom Class would be used in Alaska. Voyager and Mariner seem to be retrofitted to suit the Asian market according to some recent cruisers (ie. Asian signage, etc), Adventurer looks to be in San Juan in 2015 (again by looking at future indivdual port schedules) and Navigator again in Europe, the only question mark was Explorer... and most recently the word is PC. So close to zero chance of Voyager/Freedom class to Alaska, but likely the Jewel will meet up with the radiance in summer of 2015 :)

Wow! The Solstice just grew by eight feet in only two minutes!!

May i ask you who "she" is?

:She" is the Explorer. I don't think this was discovered by viewing summer and fall 2015 port schedules like many of the other ships, but was said here on CC by several posters that the staff on the Explorer itself have been told this. Then again, you talk to Floridans close to Orlando and they believe/hope that they will get Oasis III or Anthem with their new port facilities so who knows... still a couple of years away anyways so things can change quite a bit :)

The Explorer is moving to Port Canaveral in November 2014. The two week cruise is open for booking and it is filling up fast.
