Marrakesh or Fes travel time

I am planning a shore excursion from the port in Casablanca to either Marrakesh or Fes. I'm getting different information concerning the travel time it takes to get from Casablanca to either of these cities. I am in port for 14 hours (9 am-11 pm). Would really like to travel to Fes for the day to see the tanneries but will there be enough time to spend in Fes once there.

What is the travel distance in time between the two cities. Any recommendations will be appreciated. Travelling mid October 2014 if that makes a difference.
