Cagney's with a vegetarian?

I sailed with a vegan, a vegetarian, and someone allergic to shellfish last summer on the Breakaway. Although the pre-concierge informed me that no vegan options were available on board, the food officers present at the CC Meet and Greet made everything wonderful! Everyone with food issues had a special meal at Cirque and the vegan had special meals at every restaurant the staff knew we would be in...including a menu delivered to our room in the morning! I believe your daughter will be fine as long as you reach out to NCL prior to your cruise (access desk....others on CC have posted the # numerous times...just search) and/or attend your Meet and Greet and talk personally with the officers. You and yours will be taken good care of if your experience is anything like mine was!:)

If she is 18, she is old enough to go to the buffet on her own one night and have a plateful of salad etc, then you can go to Cagneys in peace, without subjecting her to all the steak/ meat smells..it is after all a Steakhouse.

She may make friends in the teen club, and be happy to dine with one of them..

I would have loved to have been separated from my parents at 18..;)

Thank you for all the help. We are dining alone some nights but I didn't want to leave her out when we go to Cagney's with the 2 boys.

Thats probably THE night that you should dine separately.

Because it specialises in meat.

Our daughter is Vegan( which is obviously stricter than vegetarian) she would not be seen in a steakhouse under any conditions.

She wont even go to any family house dinners if meat is on the menu.

Not even at Xmas...if she is there it has to be vegan food.

Its just not worth the drama.....

So We never dine together anymore..not out...not at home.

Her choice, not ours, because we are wicked animal eaters.

If your daughter is a vege because of the animal issue, she would not be comfortable in a steakhouse.

This thread is of particular interest to me as I am the family vegetarian and also allergic to shellfish (there's always one that has to make things difficult for everyone else, right?!) and I am sure my steak loving extended family will want to dine at Cagney's as a group.

My Grandmother is taking about 30 of us on this trip. It is a family trip that means a lot to her and the whole point of it is to be together. Believe me, I'd be the first person who would opt out and go eat by myself but again, she wants us to be together and if she's footing the bill, I feel obligated to be an active participant, as difficult as we all know that can be!

I'm 30 so I can't go hang out in the Teen Club. ;)

I'm not really sure what to do, I obviously won't be munching on a steak but I don't know if a salad and sides is worth the specialty restaurant charge.

Good to hear they were accomodating though.

I've always stuck to the buffets and MDRs on my past cruises but my family has a much more refined palate than I do.

We also have one vegetarian daughter and she ALWAYS enjoys Cagneys AND Le Bistro. The waiters have always been able to put something together for her.....the one that I recall was a stacked portebello mushroom and vegetable thing? Also, we have a son with autism who although is NOT vegetarian....loves the kid's macaroni and cheese and even though it is NOT on the menu....the waiters in ALL of the specialty restaurants have always brought him his mac n cheese ANd an order of plain old french fries.....in addition to whatever else he is having.

Our experience is that the waiters and staff are more than willing to do what it takes to satisfy your needs.

And I would not even care about the service charge as some have mentioned....as if this is a trip that your grandmother is paying for and she wants everyone to be together.....I am sure that she will not have an issue with paying for Cagneys...even if you don't have any meat!

Our sympathies. It, certainly, must be a difficult and awkward situation. We have never had issues with vegetarians in our circles. Whether their diet is for religious, philosophical, or personal reasons; they have always been appreciative of any effort to accommodate them. Likewise, they don't impose their position upon others. Tolerance is important, in any social situation, particularly amongst family.

Also, vegetarians don't consume any animal product. Lacto-ovo vegetarians include dairy and eggs but still don't consume anything that is a product of a live slaughter (gelatin, rennet from an animal source, etc.). "Vegans" are often political and even militant, in our experience.

They sure can be...ours is..to a ridiculous level.

She goes to every rally, belongs to every group, that is anti using animals for any reason..that even includes horse racing.

She has been known to go to a restaurant with her sister( who bends over backwards to please her) and found out there was meat on the menu..and she has stood up and abused everyone in the restaurant...

She travels a lot,is Aussie of course, so its always a long distance travel, but she always has to research where to eat before she goes, even las Vegas..the land of junk food.(full of animal fat)..there can be no "go in on an off chance" eatery.

she just came back from Morocco and complained that she could only eat vegetable tagines,..what did she expect..they even eat sheeps eyes!!

there is just no give and take at all with her.

we are disgraceful in her eyes because we do eat meat..

last Xmas dinner was awful.. her sister held it at her place, and catered for the one vegan out of 16..which meant we all had to have it.. everyone invited was looking for the meat on the table..

oh, no...only salads..

the men were not happy.

so its just easier to not eat together..ever..

Yikes.

Just...yikes.

A militant vegan might be the most obnoxious creature on the planet.

I am a happy, delightful, cruising vegan! People know I'm vegan only if they ask or if they hear me order a meal. I have been known to eat some cake that just might have an egg in it! I mean, I'm not an insaneatarian!

I have never had a problem in any dining venues on NCL. They are always happy to dream up something for me, or I just order sides.

Luckily my daughter is accepting of other peoples eating choices & she's fine with going to Cagney's too. I just want to make sure she can an entree here.

good for you..a good vegan:)

the difference between you and "our vegan", is that she would not go to the restaurants on the ship if they were serving meat..she has been on one cruise and absolutely hated it..she had to go to the buffet and get a plate and go back to her cabin..

how awful it must be to want to live like that..we absolutely love animals, and would never harm one for fun, or to be cruel, but they are still a food source on the planet.

so yes, she is an insaneatarian..lol.

Not sure how current this menu is but here it is.

so apart from some very basic sides..this is the only actual meal..if you could call it a meal.

Arugula Salad ...(Shaved pear | red bell pepper | red onions | spring onions |

raspberry vinaigrette

hardly worth the cost factor..

My niece just turned 17 and has been a Vegan for 2 years. She loves doing things with her friends but also with her family including me and her grandma. We are taking her for an 18th birthday cruise next year on Jewel in the Haven.

When we go to a specialty restaurant, and we will, several times it wi be as much about being together as the meal. And although Katie is strict on her diet, she dines easily with us carnivores. :)

It is pretty condescending to relegate them to a buffet salad. Because, there is so much more out there for them. People think vegans live on salad and grilled vegetables which would be very boring.

There is definitely more than salads to choose from at the buffet, I just used that as an example..but at the buffet she can choose as much as she likes, and would have a bigger variety if she helped herself to it, rather than being served a plate of side vegetables in a steak restaurant.

I once had a vegan stay with me for 4 mths, she was born a vegan , she was 19 and had never had any animal products in her life..she was German, and told me that she had never had as much variety, and such good vegan food as I cooked for her..

I do love to cook, but the thing about cooking everything she ate in separate pots and pans everynight really got to me.

She had never had chocolate or ice cream in her life, because in Germany the cows get such bad treatment..when she saw our beautiful green pastures and said.

".wow, you have happy cows.."

she converted to eating chocolate and ice cream..she couldnt get enough of it by the time she left..:D

I guess it just proves the wide spectrum here. Vegetarians, vegans, pescatarians, lacto, ovo, flexatarians, etc. with varying disciplines and attitudes. Can't easily be put in a box, can they?

My sis works at Whole Foods, so many choices now for my niece. And as time goes on there will be more choices in dining out. Even on ships.

And not healthy.

Being a vegan or even a vegetarian isn't as easy as simply not eating meat. There are nutritional needs that need to be met.

Being a vegan and not being able to partake of various wines and beers would be a deal-breaker around.

So glad to hear several stories about specialty restaurants accommodating Veggies of all kinds :-) We will be cruising on Dawn with my vegetarian twin cousins (early 20's), and they will most definitely be joining us in the Specialties, especially since we eat in one for dinner each night!
