No smoking on balconys?

Recommended Posts
Great suggestions, can't chew gum, and I don't bite my nails, but I pick at them, lol. Food won't be a problem, been having problems eating lately. Hmm, maybe a year round cruise with lots of frozen drinks, that could do it.
While at home, you could even try to keep yourself entertained with hot herbal teas - try different flavors. Don't start cracking your knuckles. :p

Try these as long as you don't mind sugar free artificial stuff. (probably not as bad as ciggies) I love them.
I have smoked for 25 years. Always considered it my God given right to do what I wanted with my body. That included always getting a balcony so I could smoke, paying 500 dollars a year to be a member of the Admirals Club with AA just so I could smoke when I flew once or twice a year, and so on.
I have not smoked for 3 days now. And I am pretty sure I will win this fight. To be honest my children are the biggest reason for the sudden change of heart, my health being number 2, and this thread has really played a big part in my decision to become a non smoker. May sound stupid to you but I guess I tended to not think about it but when you read something like this thread every day it is hard to ignore. I would become so mad at peoples view of smokers I would log off and tell myself I am done with CC. Ten minutes later I would be back on seeing what the next smoke hater was saying. I guess what I am trying to say is that everyone who smokes knows how bad it is, but that is not enough reason for many to stop. It is by far the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. So in the end the very least this thread has done is play a part in my decision to become smoke free.
Wishing you luck.

I'm right along with you. It's been 7 days for me so far. I'm determined to do it this time. I actually quit 20 years ago for 6 years and went back, after just having one cigarette. I know this time that I can't fool myself by thinking I can have just one. It's getting so hard to smoke anywhere, that I figured it would be easier to just quit.

With the cost of cigarettes at $10 a pack, I'll be able to upgrade to a suite or add a 3rd cruise every year with the money I save.
You can do it. I did. I had a heart attack at 53 and quit cold turkey after 38 years of smoking. It has been 7 months and I feel great. It is the best thing I have done for me and my family. It won't be long before just about everything is smoke free. Good luck!
well done, I had my heart attack Christmas day 2012 and gave up after 45yr.Over here we get encouraged to go to special cardiac rehab gym classes, these are free thanks to our fantastic NHS. I am fitter now than I was in my 50s.

To all you smokers please give up, you dont want to put yourself or your nearest and dearest through what happened to daniels and I.

Well said, and its not just the heart they have to worry about. I was lucky so far on the heart end. I'm having lung problems so that's why I had to quit. And I had a 2 week cancer scare. That was the worst feeling, so I don't want to relive that again.

I have to send my best wishes to all of you trying to stop smoking. I never smoked in my life and as a swimmer in college had a collapsed lung and know what it is not to breath well. A heart attack is another thing!
But I wish you luck also because of the new policy on RCL ships. Just off the Oasis and the port side 16th and 15th deck side is dedicated to smokers! Never remember that the first time we cruised on her.

The amount of loungers was reduced one day when it was so windy on the 16th deck, people were forced down to the 15th deck and with the smokers on the port side it left very few loungers for the nonsmokers. Also on days when we sailed back to Ft Lauderdale the sunset was on the port side and wanting to take pictures you had to fight the smokers. Having allergies it made it very uncomfortable.

As for the casino. I love to spend some time playing blackjack a couple of nights while cruising, but the casino has turned into a smoking lounge. I met one cruiser who said his cabin was close enough to the casino that if he wanted to smoke he just goes to the casino! My wife and I actually took a floor higher to get past the casino to shows because just walking through it was unbearable. :(
We all have habits but when it effects other people as much as smoking does there needs to be some consideration for those around you. I am glad to hear today that CVS is not selling tobacco products starting in October. A loss of a billion dollars a year but they are making the move. :) Look, I like my Scotch but it doesn't effect other people. :D

With all that said it was our second time on Oasis and she is as beautiful as the first time we sailed her in 2011. Shows, crew, specialty dinning and everything else fantastic! The chefs table was worth very dime and would recommend it to anyone!!

I thought smoking was only allowed in the casino while actually gambling? Seems like using the casino as a smoking lounge could make the habit even more expensive.

Only if they actually gambled while there. In our experience there have been many smokers who only smoked in the casino, took up space, but never gambled.

Just a guess, but if that ends up being the norm, and casino revenues drop as a result - I predict you'll see a change to that rule!
There could also be another reason RCI are not allowing e-cigs is the danger of them exploding whilst being recharged and so the potential for starting fires.

A close friend of mine was luckily in the room when hers exploded whilst being recharged and so was able to prevent the home furnishings from catching fire, although she now needs new carpeting and redecoration of the damaged wall.
Cell phones and batteries also have been known to explode. I guess the ships will ban those as well? Hope you're doing well, Peter. Congrats on the 4 years!!!

You are right. The policy doesn't say anything about having to gamble there, just that there are smoking and non-smoking sections. In my experience having a non-smoking section is a farce. The smoke doesn't know to stay in it's own section and it's really difficult to train. It's like a no peeing section in a pool. They didn't even say the casino had to be operating. So basically, the casino is designated as the indoor smoking section. I don't need to gamble so I can easily avoid that area.

From RCCL website: "Casino Royale allows smoking and has a designated area for non-smoking guests. There will be visible signage indicating the non-smoking area in the casino. There are select cruises departing from China that will not have a non-smoking area in the casino."

Doesn't mention that they have to be gambling or even that the casino has to be open at the time.

Good for you. Your kids, and potential grand kids will be the better for it. You're correct... you do have right to do what you want with your body. I think most non-smokers would agree with that and if smoking didn't affect others then nobody would care. I am happy to hear about your decision and how these discussions helped you come to that conclusion and I'm pulling for you to be able to overcome. I have never been a smoker, but I have seen many people struggle with getting that monkey off their back and it's not easy. Sounds like you have motivation...

I wouldn't have the will power. As the smoke in the Casino would get to me and that would be another place I wouldn't spend money in. Being an Ex-Smoker, in my day I smoked almost 4 packs a day. It has been 20 years since I quit and haven't looked back ( although there are times and situations that I do kind of miss them). But I made a commitment that I wanted to see Grandkids and still waiting for them. Still smoke free but I have to work at it. Edited by Folk Singer

E-cigs are allowed to be "smoked" in the same locations as cigarettes. They will be recharged in the room so there is no fear of explosions on RCI's part.

One big rule change no that smoking isn't permitted on the balconies is that there is no smoke free night anymore in the casino. This might have more people changing out of their formal clothes early since most don't want them to end up smelly in need of immediate cleaning.
Clarification. You have a high sensitivity to cigarette smoke as it causes irritation and bronchospasm. This is a very good reason to avoid cigarette smoke at all costs. However, it is NOT an allergy. Allergies are immune-mediated responses. What you describe is a severe sensitivity to an irritant.
"Cigarette smoking has special meaning for persons with asthma. In asthma, allergic inflammation of the bronchial tubes causes mucus production, leading to cough and phlegm. In long-term cigarette smokers, chronic inhalation of smoke from burning tobacco leaves also stimulates the mucous glands in the bronchial tubes to make excess mucus, giving rise to daily cough with phlegm."

I have Asthma. I'm so happy that RCI has designated specific areas for smokers. I will make sure to stay away from those areas. I hope smokers will have the same respect and follow RCI's policies.

I agree. I was only referring to the fact that there is no such thing as an "allergy" to smoke. It is not an immune mediated response. It's an irritant. I harp on this because, as a physician, I think people are far too quick to call all sorts of things allergies. There are a lot of ways to not tolerate something without being allergic to it. Too much sugar will make a diabetic sick, but nobody says that's an allergy...

:) I agree and understand that it is not an allergy. I have allergies to dust, pollen, grass and dog hair, and there is a distinct difference between an asthma attack and an allergy attack. With that said I would still hope smokers will respect others who have health problems.

We haven't had a smoke free night for a lot of cruises lately.
On IOS they had more Non Smoking machines by the Cashier Desk but it as still smokey in there
As we had smokers on all 4 of our B2B on board I haven't a lot of faith in the new policy yet. Hopefully with more notification on board of the new policy it will improve.
Even had someone puff an e-cigarette on her neck, at Muster in our area.

Quick Question, see you are going on Independence of the seas. Looking at this one for January 2015. After being on Oasis and Allure, would love to hear your thoughts. Biggest thing for us is entertainment and specialty restaurants. Pease provide a review. Will be our first Diamond cruise. :D

Now back to the smoking issue! :o
