We would like to do a Mexican Riviera cruise on the Mercury but it looks like January is the only time we could go. Has anyone done this cruise in January and if so what was the weather like?

We cruised to the Sea of Cortez in 12/03. This cruise included Cabo san Lucas. The weather was great and warm. Farther south should be warmer. Warning-if you are snorkelers, the water temperature was quite cool according to our shipmates who went kayaking and snorkeling.

Hope you have a good time.

I did this trip in March and thought the temps while in Mexico were great. The only problem I had was that the first day at sea was very cold as was the last day at sea. It didn't ruin the trip but certainly hindered the relaxing days at sea soaking up the sun. It was only about 55 the last sea day so most of us wound up huddled indoors.

We did this trip in February this year. It was a little cool the first two days in and last two days out. We didn't care because it was real warm the further south we got. Guess it depends on how much you sunbathe.

P. S. It was a terrific cruise.

Cruiseisgood: Thanks for the advise. I checked out that internet site and downloaded some averages. It does look like January is a bit cooler but not a lot. Cabo is the coolest and then it warms up as you go south. The average high during the day seems to be around 80 degrees.

Carol459: Thank you as well for your reply. We have snorkeled but only in the caribbean. I think that spoils a person because the waters are so warm. We will have to decide what we want the most. We love the warm waters and temperatures of the caribbean but we would also like to experience some other places. Thanks again for you help!

Rae,

We're booked on the Mercury for Jan 7 2005. Any chance that's what you are looking at????

Temps not a whole lot of concern as almost anything is better than January in DC and snorkling is not my thing (though DH enjoys it).

Mostly, our thoughts are the same as yours -- something a bit different than the Caribbean and this is the only time of year that we can cruise together.

Hoping maybe we're on the same trip....

Thanks for the posting. We have a hold on a cabin on the January 17/05 sailing. We really wanted the 11 day cruise so opted for this one. We live in Canada so we will certainly appreciate anything warmer than here. Our winters are pretty unpredictable. They go from very mild to extremely cold. Take care and have a wonderful cruise.

Bye for now: Rae

This is a local cruise for us and we've done it several times in both December and January. We look for the first and last two days to be cold. Once at Cabo and further South the temperature rises along with the humidity. This January there was a bit of rain here and there; actually a lot in Zihautenejo but it was gone by lunch time. The journey back from Cabo tends to be rougher than that going.

We went on this cruise last January on the Vision on the 4th of January and the weather was perfect from Cabo down and back. We have sailed this cruise 2ce in the past 2 years and love the break. Our personal tour guide in Mazatlan says that January is one of the best months in Mexico. Have Fun.

Thanks so much to everyone for your input on cruising Mexico in January. We've decided that we will give it a try and have made our booking final today. We had been holding a cabin over the weekend and have just finalized everything this morning. Thanks again and we are really looking forward to experiencing Mexico.

Be sure to check out the Ports of Call boards for excursion recommendations. I was not too enthused about the ship's offerings, but there are a lot of other options.

We are booked on the 12/27 New Years Eve cruise on the Mercury. I have taken this cruise on other ships twice, and on large sportfishers at least 5 times, all between November and March. It will be cool (sweater weather) until you hit Cabo San Lucas - then should be great weather after that. Same for the return - once past Cabo going north to San Diego it will get a little bit cooler, windier, and the seas will be choppier and heavier.
