Smoking on Breakaway

We are thinking of sailing on the Breakaway on March 9th. We have only sailed on Celebrity before, will we really notice the smell of smoke around the ship? I read that it tends to be smoky from the Casino in a lot of the public areas around there. How about on the balconies, does it spoil sitting on them for some of you?

Thank you

I've not noticed an issue on my two cruises, and I'm quite anti-smoking. Some have reported unfortunate situations where their balconies were rendered useless by having "high volume" smokers on nearby balconies, including the smell coming into their cabin.

As for the public areas of the ships, I've not noticed an issue there either other than the casino when busy. There's no "lingering stench" in my experience, but others may have a different opinion.

Due to NCL's policy allowing smoking on balconies I guess it's a bit of a crap shoot. I'm sure most people end up without issues, since we don't hear much in the way of problems and people with complaints tend to post more than those with none. Having said that, only you can decide if it's worth the risk to sail NCL given their more lax policy

The answer is MAYBE. The thing is that SMOKERS are within their right to smoke on their NCL balcony. So, they are not the bad guy. I know that when this non-smoker books NCL.

if the search wasn't currently disabled we could point you at dozens of threads on this topic. Just insert a different ship name each time :)

For search engine option try using google and put NCL in the header,

so it would read "NCL smoking policy". This option has been working well for me and it was mention on this board recently

Hello, We are just off the Breakaway and I had been reading here about the situation with the smoke from the casino. The smell was very prevalent in the casino that is situated deck 8 around the Atrium and then down a few corridors. We didnt spend any time in the Atrium but I could smell smoke from the casino on the next level. while walking through. never ate at any specialty restaurants so I don't know about the smell in any of them. Some people here have mentioned they could smell it in some of the restaurants. We could smell smoke at times while on our balcony and also one time in the cabin but for the most part it was not a problem. The strange thing was while in the casino I saw very few people smoking.

Probably because they just do a very poor job of filtering it. That's the cruise line's fault, not the smokers', and I'm a non-smoker.

Agreed --- also if there better ways to communicate smoking preferences to the cruise line, it might help. For example: if a person books a balcony GTY through a TA, it would be helpful if the TA's would then tell NCL that the guests are smokers, and to please try to put them in an aft cabin.

I don't understand why that is so difficult. Of course, if people book specific cabins, there's no way around it.

I am a smoker and have never booked a forward or even mid balcony for this reason. I have no wish to make enemies amongst my fellow cruisers and neighbors onboard. When I am in my cabin, I do not smoke analog cigs, and use my electronic cig instead. Having said that, I don't see this issue resolving anytime soon.

Just got off the Breakaway on Sunday. The smell coming out of the Casino wasn't smoky like a bar, it was an odd smell, but not smoky. This smell is not noticeable outside of the staircase area that connects the floors around the Casino.

Thanks! That's the best news I've read in a long time. I'll probably still bring along my odor eliminator spray, just in case.

Thanks everyone for your replies. We have decided to book the cruise, so we leave on March 9th in a Spa Balcony cabin. I am very excited.

A little word of advice.

I've always been struck by the fact that some people seem really bothered by the smoke around the Casino on the Epic and Breakaway, in places like o'Sheehans, whilst others never even noticed it (I don't like smokey places generally but have never noticed any smoke outside the Casino).

I wonder how many of the people who have been bothered by it were looking for it. If you sit in these areas sniffing the air to see if you can smell smoke then it's fairly likely that you will. If you put it to the back of your mind and concentrate on having a good time then perhaps you won't notice the smoke even if it is there.

I agree with you, we've booked now so it's a moot point. We are going to enjoy the cruise for what it is and not let it bother us.

Just got off the Breakaway and had a terrific time. We are already booked for next year.

Before sailing her my two main concerns were the 1700+ children on board and the smokiness of the ship.

Both concerns were no problem. Kids were well behaved and fun to be with, and smoke on the ship was avoidable.

We stayed away from the smoky casino. We avoided walking under Deck 7's open atrium near leBistro and had no problems. Most of the activities that we enjoyed were on Deck 6 atrium under O'Sheehan's, and there was no odor to my joy!

This is always a hot topic for cruiselines...non-smokers like me who grew up with secondary smoke and now suffering the health consequences, and smokers who have an addiction to nicotine that they struggle with.

So go have a good time...you won't have a problem on your balcony either.

We had a wonderful cruise on the Breakaway. One thing I did notice was the smell of smoke in and around the casino. It never really bothered me before. I smoked for many years but have been smoke free for 12 years. This time the smell was really thick. As soon as we returned to our room, we had to change our clothes.
