Budget Queen (a regular poster here who seems to be missing right now) strongly recommends the small-boat tour. Strongly. I recommended it to a friend of mine (who isn't all that much into small boats, Alaska or scenery) and she considers it one of the best days she has EVER had. Ever.

We did Tracy Arm on the ship one year and it was spectacular. I'd be on the small boat the next chance I get.

SD Mike did it in 12 on the NCL Jewel, I also did a similar excursion while in Juneau on the NCL Pearl. Allen Marine runs the tour and it is great. It is the best way to see the fjord and glaciers (yes there are two but one is hidden up one of the arms that only the small boat can go up.

You will miss some excursion time in Juneau but not that much - the small boat tour takes around 5 hrs.
