General Wave action Bermuda vs Carribbean??

Recommended Posts

In general, from your experience, how is the wave action accross the Atlantic to Bermuda vs a Carribbean sailing such as Miami to the islands? Of course, not including storms which tend to offer nice wavey rides in any water.

I sailed to Bermuda 4 times in the past year and had rough seas every sailing. The worst was a tropical storm last October on the Horizon.

What do you consider rough seas?

- A constant roll?

- splashing waves over the deck?

- unable to eat and drink?

- hanging over the edge of the balcony to get some fresh air?

We've sailed to Bermuda at the end of April and several times the end of August. Sometimes its smooth, but generally it is rougher than the Caribbean. How rough? It was not as bad as a hurricane, but the ship was rolling and you could feel the spray on the promenade deck.

We sailed Boston to Bermuda in September. It was rough. How rough? The pools were closed because they were almost empty for all but 2 days of the trip- the water had splashed out and one night the doors and drawers in our stateroom were slamming open and closed with the movement of the ship. That's what we get for sailing in the Atlantic during hurricane season. We also sailed in September in the Caribbean. It wasn't glass but it definitely wasn't anywhere near as bad as it was in the Atlantic.

I guess it's the luck of the draw. The weather is so unpredictable and we're at it's mercy no matter what the time of year when we're out in the open ocean.
