flahagan Posted March 9, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 9, 2014 There are 5 of us traveling together on the Divina and we will be driving from central Fl. to Miami. We will be restricted to one piece of luggage each for the drive down, and the men are wondering if they can get by with wearing slacks, dress shirt and tie for elegant nights (sans jackets). We don't want to offend anyone, but space will be at a premium here. Will they be accepted in the MDR?
saphir Posted March 9, 2014 #2 Share Posted March 9, 2014 travelling by plane and my husband brings a suit. We have a suitcase each.

It also got pretty warm in the bar area by the dining room area and in the dining room.
jchipgcs Posted March 9, 2014 #4 Share Posted March 9, 2014 Flahagnan, you'll be fine. I'm planning on 2 jackets that can go with several colors of pants. Most nights I won't wear a jacket at all. If you want to be in the spirit of things and look snappy on formal nights. Just keep jackets and pants dark. One formal night wear a nice tie with your sport coat and dressy pants and the next time mix it up with a flashy bow tie. It's a tropical cruise........forget all the "rules" you think you know. flahagan Posted March 9, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted March 9, 2014 Thanks to all for the responses! One other question - I've seen it mentioned that shorts aren't allowed anywhere on deck in the evenings. My husband has several very nice dress shorts that he paired with collared shirts on a previous cruise on casual evenings. Is this not allowed in the lounges or casino on Divina? Shorts are allowed to be worn around the cruise ship. Multiple nights I wore shorts in the Casino and other venues.
jchipgcs Posted March 9, 2014 #7 Share Posted March 9, 2014 I just try to steer clear of any areas that are full of people all dressed up. I wear my fancy stuff to dinner, then immediately run back and put on my "dressy" shorts to be comfortable the rest of the night.

neptuno Posted March 11, 2014 #10 Share Posted March 11, 2014 Yes I got away with..... OK, but are we americans so arrogant that we do not respect foreign cultures or their dress code suggestions?
Danbee46 Posted March 11, 2014 #11 Share Posted March 11, 2014 OK, but are we americans so arrogant that we do not respect foreign cultures or their dress code suggestions? Not at all. The key word in your posting is "suggestions," not mandates. When I go on vacation I want to be comfortable. That doesn't mean I dress like a bum. I will wear clean slacks, a collared shirt and a sport jacket, but I will not wear a tie because I find it to be the most uncomfortable piece of clothing. I will look neat and clean and if anyone is offended by that it's their problem, not mine.
Bosjoe Posted March 11, 2014 #12 Share Posted March 11, 2014 (edited) OK, but are we americans so arrogant that we do not respect foreign cultures or their dress code suggestions? Shoot me then. I was and many others did not have jackets. This is a warm ship, and they will not deny you service. and this ship is based in the USA, not over seas now, and they need to compete with the market here. neptuno Posted March 12, 2014 #14 Share Posted March 12, 2014 ..... I wear my fancy stuff to dinner..... Yes of course. That is well heeled, and to be expected. What is troublesome, are those who recommend to others that it is OK to break the rules. MSC asks that jeans not be worn on deck (and MDR) after 6pm. No big deal. Many aboard are paying good money for an upscale experience. Let's cooperate. Dinner in the MDR is one event to be respected. Those who don't care to "wash and brush up" should enjoy their dinner at the buffet.

Tank tops, bikini, bathrobes, and bare feet in any restaurants or buffet areas are not permitted, No shorts in restaurants for dinner. Also suggested does not mean required. It does not say not-permitted like above. Edited March 12, 2014 by Bosjoe

No one recommended anything, Bosjoe stated what he saw, and what the Divina stated in their daily! You just don't like it, and make up rules that don't exist! What's troublesome as you put it, is your attitude 'dictating' what the cruise line themselves don't enforce! Another words don't let what others wear trouble you cause you'll never be happy on this subject! As the old saying goes, 'the ship has left the port' on this issue! Tiamaria64 Posted March 12, 2014 #17 Share Posted March 12, 2014 I'm confused now. Can hubby wear jeans with cotton shirt or polo top on casual nights. If I make him take dress trousers for the full two weeks and he sees others wearing jeans he may just throw me overboard!

No need to avoid all ships and all cruise lines ,just stay awaya from NCL ))) Most of USA passengers dress up proper :)

bobstheboy Posted March 14, 2014 #21 Share Posted March 14, 2014 I have many friends who come from the USA, they are certainly my kind. My point is that from my experience in the Caribbean, it is the USA passengers who like to change after dinner into very casual clothes and I am not comfortable with that. I have heard your compatriots complaining about this issue as well.

Ok, you are not comfortable with that, and from what you've said, and what others here have stated what they've seen on the Divina, casual outside the dining room on Formal night is acceptable by the cruise line, and most people like it that way! So you accept it, or cruise with someone else!

I'm so sorry you're uncomfortable when I put on a $300 silk Tommy Bahama camp shirt and pressed bermuda shorts to walk around in sticky wet 85 degree nights on our Caribbean itineraries. I too was similarly uncomfortable poolside on a European line at the pool all day with the hairy backed, plus sized Euro-men squeezed into banana hammocks designed for 12 year old boys. That and the 75 year old ladies who think they need to expose the "twins" for a bit of sunshine at the pool. No matter how much oil gets slathered on those things, they aren't going to re-inflate. But I just sat back, closed my eyes chuckled.

On deck for a deck party was it ? Totally different situation. As for the poolside description - totally agree, but again during day so not the same situation - must try harder.
