The stop for the changing of the guard would probably be at Stygmata Square which is opposite the palace. All very walkable. It's not far at all from the palace/Stygmata Sq to either the Plaka area or the Acropolis. 15 minute walk to Plaka at the most I'd guess.

You're very welcome carolynne :)

Last night I was on the tablet and couldn't interact properly with the link but here is the hoho link:

http://www.citysightseeing.gr/

The blue route which picks up at Piraeus takes you to the Acropolis stop where you can pick up the red route to Stygmata Sq (but it's very walkable!). If you click the button 'Start tour' it's a great representation of where you go and what's worth getting off for at each stop.

But if you look at the red route, can you see stop #1? Well just on the opposite side is the Parliament building - which is where the changing of the guard takes place. Sorry, I called it the palace last night - but as you will see it is very close to stop #1 where you'd get off the Hoho (red route after connecting with the blue route which goes from the port). So easy to walk across the the main road - you can't miss it. Incidentally the Thomson 'Athens on your Own' excursion drops you across from Andrian's Gate (#2 red route).

Depending on what else you want to see you can easily walk from the Parliament building towards Monastiraki (where there are local, tourist and flea markets), across to see the Agora, pass the Acropolis and into Plaka with it's old charm and cafe culture and shops. That whole area imo is very interesting and can easily be done on foot in a day so you get a real flavour of Athens' best bits (unless you have a very early sailing - occasionally they leave Piraeus at 15.00 and then you do have to be careful with your timings).

We love Athens - easy to DiY although we've done it on the train in the past, we've elected to do the on your own transfer more recently to give us the maximum time in the city. We've not tried the hoho but it looks like a good option - at least to get into the city, then you can find lots to do on foot independently unless of course you prefer to do the red bus tour as well.

Anyway enjoy - if there's anything else I can help with, just ask! ;) :)
