Harley Rentals in Hawaii

We will be on the Radiance for the September 24 cruise from VanCouver to Hawaii. I thought one of the days we're in Maui I'd like to rent a Harley for a tour of the island. Just wondering if any one else had done this or had information. I'm a HOG member.

We aren't riders, but I can tell you that there is a Harley rental place on Front St. in Lahaina. If I recall correctly (and that's a crap shoot at best), it is a little south of the pier (toward the 505 Front St. complex).

 

We stopped to get a soda at a place in the same area and DH started chatting with the Harley folks. They were very nice and had interesting stories to tell.

On our last trip to Maui our friends rented a Harley in Lahaina (the one Spleen noted) and had a blast driving all around the island. My girlfriend especially liked going up past Kapalua around the north side of the island on the Kahekili Hwy. She liked this drive even better than the Road to Hana.

We didn't rent in Maui, but we did in Kona on the Big Island from the Harley dealer. DJ's does rent Harleys, but have a very limited number of bikes and their rates were a little lower. The Dealer had a larger selection,we got a Road King cause we wanted the bags to carry our snorkeling gear. There was a little too much traffic on Maui and the road too Hana was totally out of the question. Too many cars and too many wet spots and it is basically 1 1/2 lanes wide. The Big Island was wide open, very little traffic and riding up into the mountains was both extremely scenic and refreshingly cool. I was fine with the tshirt, but my wife was a bit chilled, a light windbreaker or long sleve shirt would have helped. We spent the entire day riding and ended up keeping the bike overnight because we got back to Kona too late. There are a few pictures in the Hula V album in the link below.

PS.....DJ's is within walking distance of the docks and the Dealer is at most a mile away.

Not to be too picky (well, okay maybe it is), but I think you meant the one that I mentioned further up the thread.

 

It's true that Spleen and I often agree and seem to give lots of similar input, but he's a Hawaii local (and a male) and I'm a mainlander (haole) who visits as often as possible (and most emphatically, as DH will confirm, a female ;)).

Did you make prior arrangements at the Harley Dealer? How did you get to the dealership?

I reserved a couple of days before hand because I wanted the Road King because of the saddle bags. Both the Dealer and DJ's always seemed to have a bike available. We were on a land vacation so we had a rental car, but it would be very easy and inexpensive to get a cab from the pier to the Dealer and of course DJ's is right across from the Pier. Our vote is for the BI. The wide open spaces and lack of traffic just scream Harley! (and this is from two people who absolutely adore Maui beyond anywhere else on earth and own a second home there)
