Question re Chair Hogs ...

You posted the same thing in a separate thread but I'll respond to it where it should have been left in this thread. Certainly it's not right for somebody to take your chair when your wife has been gone only a few minutes but the vast majority of the cases are a different situation. I have never removed anybody's belongings from a chair however I do think it's very unfair the way there are numerous loungers occupied only by towels for extended periods of time on the deck. What would have been nice is if you had offered for that person to sit in your wife's chair only while she is gone. A lot of times a person is only looking to sit someplace for a few minutes and would be gone before the person even got back. If it's clearly understood from the beginning that the seat is only open until your wife gets back even if that's only a few seconds later then I think courtesy should be used.

Something similar happened to us on the Breeze last year...

Got down to Lido around 8:00. Claimed our six chairs, and, yes, ALL 6 of us were there:rolleyes: Put our towels and belongings down, and went to grab breakfast at the buffet, to bring back and enjoy in our chairs.

While we were gone, MAYBE 10 minutes, we all came back to stickers on our chairs.

Well this LOVELY family saw the stickers and figured that made the chairs THEIRS.

The time was clearly marked on the stickers. Needless to say DH had some CHOICE words for this woman. She was a NASTY individual.:rolleyes: She walked away swearing and grumbling.

I think half the problem is that people don't understand how it works.

It's not breaking any rules but it creates less of a chance for problems. I go get my food first as well while my wife finds us a seat and then she goes and gets her food. No problem, no chance for a problem.

#1) I've never seen carnival put a sticker on the chair until the person has been gone much longer than 10 minutes. Typically its more like 20 to 30 minutes before they put the first sticker on.

#2) I've been on 15 Carnival Cruises and I'm going on my 16th one in another week. As you can imagine I have been to the buffet many times on many ships and I have never seen a person make it through the buffet in 10 minutes.

 

Both of these factors together make me believe that your group were indeed away from the chairs a lot longer than 10 minutes.

What would have been nice is if you had offered for that person to sit in your wife's chair only while she is gone. Totally agree. We are adults and we need to start acting like adults. Don't move stuff from a chair that's only been unoccupied for 10 minutes.

Peoples habits are their own and not up to you to dictate in what order they do things. Worry about your own vacation

I disagree. I have had people come up while I was sitting waiting for my sister to return from the restroom . I offered my sisters chair until she returned. My sister returned 10 minutes later and the person got up and moved. The lady might have preferred to keep the seat longer. But she was very appreciative that I was willing to share the space even temporarily. And I personally never use a lounger for very long. My sister likes to sun bath for a couple of hours where as I only like to sit out long enough to not be dripping wet after getting out of the hot tub. So if someone is going to be gone for 10 minutes that would be plenty of time for me to get dried off before going back to the room.

Agree to disagree. I think you are taking about the minority of cases.

 

When people walk up to take an occupied chair with towels and a bag, it means they want your chair and want it for longer than 10 minutes. It happens to us every cruise.

Not Me! thats why I dont care about chair hogs, I am personally not a chair hog and dont care about CHOGS, there are always chairs available elsewhere on other decks for me.

 

But many on CC and indeed on all cruises only want the most popular chairs and loungers so its becoming a war of "rights" and "Morals" with rules being expected to be adhered to "By the book" only OR ELSE! lol

Actually if you were correct there wouldn't be a problem. If people were prepared to plant their rear ends in the chair for an extended period of time as soon as they approach the chair then no one would be upset by the sight of numerous lounges occupied only by towels. It is because the people are not remaining in the chair but rather are off at the buffet or are at other activities while only a towel occupies the chair that makes people upset who are searching for a place to sit. I have never refused to allow someone to sit in a chair that was empty next to me no matter how briefly the chair was going to be empty and no one has ever become angry or discourteous. People usually respond to courtesy with courtesy.

We never sit by the pool where it is usually not getting wind and HOT! We go up until we are out on deck near the front of the ship with a shower nearby. There are usually plenty of loungers up there.

The pools are so small anyway I don't know why people HAVE to be in them.

All I do is when I get up for my morning coffee I go by the lido deck and look around at all the chairs with towels on them and start moving towels and stack them or move them to random areas , very funny to watch people when they come back in two hours too find out they have been punked, I actually witnessed a push and shove with a elderly handicapped lady when she tried to find a chair in the adult section and when she asked who was sitting at a lounge chair everyone said no one has been here all morning, so her and her helper moved the towels only to be bullied and shoved off her chair by this Man ( did I mention she was handicapped ) security finally came as stand byers took care of the idiot

On my recent cruise it was a huge problem and it took away from the enjoyment of the pool. The majority of chairs were “reserved” and the pool attendant refused to do anything about it. I’m not talking about people running to the buffet to get food or drink, I’m talking hours. I pointed out to the attendant that there were only about 4 people in the pool but 20 or 30 so chairs were “reserved”. He just shrugged. This was in the Adults Only pool. People are just downright rude.

It is nice to be near the pool in order to cool off on those hot days, but I choose not to do so either, in my case mainly because I have a temper that needs controlling, and choose to avoid confrontational situations that could lead to a problem.

A couple of weeks ago we were on the Freedom of the Seas. The pool attendant would come around from time to time and fold the towels and lay them over the backs of the unoccupied loungers and put a sticker on the chair.

 

If the towel had not been moved within the allotted time the items were removed.

I like to dream a bit, but it would be awesome if the chairs had weight sensors, just like the front seat of a car for the airbag. If it senses weight (minimum perhaps 10-15lbs), the flag goes down. Hence, someone is using it and not off at breakfast, the bingo raffle, sleeping, at the gym. spa, casino, sports bar watching a game, or shopping.

 

 

If it doesn't sense weight for 40 minutes. "Available".

 

 

I know this is primitive, but you get the jist of my idea. Then those hogs would be exposed, and I'm sure it'll be alarming to see how many chairs do remain empty.
