Birth Certificate questions

I have been able to secretly locate my mother's birth certificate. She has one that is very small and look like a copy from micro fish or something. My question is how do I go about getting what is required with the state seal and how long does it usually take to get? Would getting a passport be easier and would it take as long to get? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I am new at all of this.

I lost mine as well. I found the phone number to the Vital Statistics department in the county ans state that I was born and they sent me a form Via e-mail to fill out and send back with a $15 check and I had it in 4 weeks.
Not too painless. I had to do the same with my husband and my oldest child as well All 3 from different states. GHood luck to yu and I will bet you will be like me and keep ahold of these ones!!!!

can't wait

You might want to check to see if your state has a website for ordering birth ctfs. Many do and you can take care of the whole thing on line. In order to get a passport you need a birth ctf anyway so that wouldn't help. Good luck!

You can order an official birth certificate for any state at www.vitalchek.com. I had to order one for my cruise last year because I lost mine from New York. I forget exactly how much it cost, but it was under $30 and arrived in less than a week!

Also, CDC maintains a listing of every state and US terratorial Vital Records offices

Vitalchek is good but remember that you'll pay an extra fee for the convenience of being able to bill your credit card.
In our case, DS turned 3 months old yesterday. He has had his passport for over a month now. I think the reason for the speed is because we're in the process of adopting him and so his application needed special handling since he's not "officially" a person yet. His legal name "Baby Boy" would look a little odd on a passport ;) so his application was actually processed and approved by a State Department supervisory officer  . He doesn't have a social security number but he does have a passport in his future legal name so we're ready for our November cruise! :D
As noted, the vital stat of your state is the best place. Passports take too long.
