Tide veiwing in Bay of Fundy

Recommended Posts

It would take about an hour and a half to get to Wolfville from Halifax, more if traffic is bad. To see the tide differences, you will need to arrive at low tide and then again at high tide, about 6 hours later. In some places the differnce between high and low tides can be as much as 50 feet, although this is a gradual increase in the water level. So, altogher you will need 8-10 hours from the time you leave Halifax.

You would probably have better luck seeing the Tidal Bore in Truro, about an hour north of Halifax. Check to tide times before you leave home. Plan on arriving 45-minites in advance and staying about 1 hour after the time. To do this you will need about 4 hours from the time you leave Halifax.

The 'highest tide in the world' happened once, a long time ago at Burntcoat Head. A lot of people expect to see a large wall of water rushing up the basin and this is not what happens. The Bay of Fundy does offer some great opportunities to see the tide difference.

That being said, the Tidal Bore is interesting to see. The Bay of Fundy narrows into the Minas Basin, and that ends at the mouth of the Salmon River in Truro. It is here that there is a viewing area set up. During the summer months, the local tourist information has represtatives there answering questions and describing what is happening. It is interesting to see the river bed go from being empty mud flats to having 12-15 feet of water in about an hour.

We are visiting Halifax in September arriving by ship. We have booked a private tour through Jonathan Duru of info@yourcab.ca (found on this board).

We will be driving to the Bay and spending most of the day there to see both low tide and almost the highest tides. 6 hours $175 USD for 2 The ship only offered a visit to a winery in conjunction with a viewing of "high tide". Check him out! Good luck!

Source, we are on the Golden Princess arriving on 9/5. Any chance this is your cruise? We're really interested in seeing the tidal range. If you're on our ship maybe we could split the cab.

Dincus, we are arriving on 9/8 on HAL Maasdam. Jonathan Duru will split the fare depending on how many people you bring. Jonathan actually conducts private tours. We plan on leaving the ship ASAP so as to see Bay of Fundy at low tide. Then, we will visit the surrounding area, have lunch and return to visit almost high tide before we have to return to the ship. Contact Jonathan to see if he is available. ps. lunch is not included in price Good Luck!
