Just back from Getaway 5-3-14

Recommended Posts

NCL did a nice job on this one! Only our 2nd NCL and Getaway is a great ship. I thought is was so nice to experience a new ship without 27 coats of paint/varnish. Went to Illusionarium on first night (20% discount 1st night only). Worth it to get the floor seats. Food was hot and good. We enjoyed sitting outside (The Waterfront) for dinners at Cagney's and Moderno. We enjoyed Burn the Floor, Wine Loves lunch and Legally Blond (not Broadway but enjoyable). Dueling Pianos was loads of fun and they go for 4 hours each night they are on. Too bad the seats in Headliners showroom are hard wood and very uncomfortable!

O'Sheehans was a great option to eat and drink. They have 4 beers on tap and a pitcher was $15. Not bad for a ship. The wings disappointed, just breaded, deep fried and covered in sauce. Breakfast and lunch were good.

The staff we encountered were all very happy. 80% of the crew have private rooms. We had beautiful weather and quite calm seas. We did private tours on St Marteen and St Thomas and will not do that again. Hire a taxi and go where you want to go. Avoid the Mountain Top on St Thomas.

We would love to go on this ship again. Might try Breakaway too.

Can you elaborate more about avoiding the mountain top in St. Thomas? We are traveling with 2 nine year olds and we thought they would enjoy the air tram to the top of the mountain. Is it a waste? Can you recommend an alternative?

We did not do the tram. It looked fun. We did a tour on our own and it took us to the Mountain top and it has a great view but was crowded and a huge traffic problem. Wasted 20 min just leaving the area! Have a great cruise!

Maddycakes - My husband and I did the tram in St. Thomas 2 years ago in August. Bought our own tickets at the window, I think they were $21 each. We both thought that it was a huge waste of money. It was already a hot day and the tram felt like we were in an oven. When we got to the top it was a beautiful view, but there was only 1 shop open and in 15 minutes we went back down. To us, it wasn't worth the money. Just my opinion.

If you go there, go early, I mean before the cruisers from the other ships (in our port day the Allure and a Carnival ship was arriving, too) get there. So before 11 am.

It is pricey a bit, indeed. They also take a photo before boarding which you can buy for 10 USD once on the top.

The ride takes about 5-7 minutes, the cabin's do not have A/C, but they have open windows and ventillation holes.

When we were there, all the shops were open on the top and there is a cafeteria/restaurant. And a few iguanas.

More importantly, there is free WiFi...

All in all, a max 30-45 mins programme.
