Driving from Sydney to Baddeck

I was thinking about renting a car and driving from Sydney to Baddeck on our port day. I was wondering if anyone else has done this and what their experience was. Is it an easy drive and do-able?

Thanks,

We did this trip on a ship's excursion so I can't tell you if it's an easy drive or not. The only thing you may miss out is all the history of the different places we either stopped at or passed on our way there. The gal on the bus was excellent and gave a very good commentary and answered many questions.

Lomo and Esme,

We will be doing this port in Sept. and don't know anything about Baddeck.

I do know alot of people have expressed that they wonder why the ship even stops in Sydney, but I've researched and heard really wonderful things about the Fortress of Louisbourg - not to take the ship's tour, but to do it on your own.

Would really appreciate info on Baddeck as a possible alternative!

Thanks!

'Beinn Bhreagh', Alexander Graham Bell's summer home still sits majestically watching over Baddeck Bay and there is a museum there. I't a beautiful piece of property that overlooks rolling hills http://baddeck.com/

The Fort at Louisberg is also a popular tourist attraction. http://www.louisbourg.ca/fort/

I'm going at the end of August, so I will let you know more about Baddeck when I get back. Hopefully, it will be in time for you. We are just looking to get outside of Sydney and see some of Cape Breton Island. So, we were going to rent a car, drive to Baddeck, look around, have lunch, and drive back. Just a nice, easy excursion.

Just spent time in that area. We drove from BC so it was definitely not a cruise.

We stayed four nites at Baddeck but the purpose was mainly that it is central and so we used it as a base. No question in my mind that Louisbourg is superior to Baddeck. You could spend a day there, but only if u are into history! That said we enjoyed the Bell Museum at Baddeck but the Fortress is a great historical site. We also drove around the Cabot Trail but it is a long drive. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information. I just stumbled on your posting. We are cruising to Sydney in September with NCL. I was about to order a tour to the inside areas of the island. I think I will make a different choice based on what you have suggested about Louisbourg. Thanks
