Dress code

Just wondering what the dress code for dinner is on the Paradise? Thinking of going Memorial Day......do you think price will drop?

I found this on the Carnival website:

Both dress codes (Cruise Casual and Cruise Elegant) for the dining rooms are described below.

Cruise Casual Dining Dress Code: Gentlemen - Sport slacks, khakis, jeans (no cut-offs), dress shorts (long), collared sport shirts; Ladies - Casual dresses, casual skirts or pants and blouses, summer dresses, Capri pants, dress shorts, jeans (no cut-offs).

Not permitted in the dining room during the Cruise Casual dinner for ladies and gentlemen: shorts, gym shorts, basketball shorts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men and baseball hats.

Cruise Elegant Dining Dress Code: Gentlemen - Dress slacks, dress shirts. We also suggest a sport coat. If you wish to wear suits and ties or tuxedos, by all means we invite you to do so. Ladies - Cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirts and blouses; if you‘d like to show off your evening gowns, that's great too!

Not permitted in the dining room during the Cruise Elegant dinner for ladies and gentlemen: shorts, gym shorts, T-shirts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, jeans, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men, sportswear, and baseball hats.

Now, as to how much it's actually enforced, I don't know.

I would say that's pretty accurate except that on "Elegant Nights" most men don't wear jackets, and rarely wear tuxes. Yes you'll see some do, but the majority of men wear Docker-type pants (khakis) and golf-type shirts. It's so true that on our last cruise, the DH and I got a big laugh because not only he, but so many other men were all wearing Ralph Lauren golf shirts. I said to the DH, "Looks like all the other ladies shop for their men at TJ Maxx and Marshalls like I do!" I said that because that's where I had gotten three Ralph Lauren shirts for the DH on the sale rack for $20. It was funny to see so many men wearing the same style shirt that I had gotten on sale. At the time they had dozens of these shirts on the sale rack in different colors and sizes so I just knew these other people had probably picked them off the sale rack at the same stores also. LOL!:D I mean, who wouldn't buy Ralph Lauren for $20? Well, I guess some people wouldn't...but it was a heck of a bargain for sure. :)

Yes, my fiancée was definitely a minority on elegant night wearing a dress shirt and tie. I even saw a man wearing black jeans instead of blue jeans. Guess that is his idea of dressing up or not. Very laid back "dress up" nowadays. You do see a few enjoying themselves looking a little more made up then usual. Every night I wear a dress so on those casual nights, I am the one dressed up. LOL

I wear a full suit everyday for work. To be honest the last thing I want to wear or even carry on vacation are suits. So yes, I only wear slacks and a collared shirt. Not even a tie. They are all on a vacation the same time I am. 😄

OP, at least you are getting some "nice" replies to your question. Dress code and smoking threads are the most volatile on Cruise Critic.

IMO, how someone else dresses does not impact my vacation. I am there for me and the DW, not anyone else. Just wear what you are comfortable with within the suggested attire list by Carnival.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to what people will wear on formal nights. Just odd the Valor and very few men in suits the first formal night. A few wore shirts and ties but the majority just wore collared shirts and slacks. Women did dress up more but no more than 50%. No suits or ties on the second formal night. Found that many more guys have dressed up on the formal nights on my last few nights so my suit was out of place on the Valor.

I think it just depends upon where you sail out of and the whims of the crowd any given week. I know that I am not bringing a suit for our 4 day out of LA in September after this last experience.

I bet the guy in jeans was a redneck. Were they ordinary, every day jeans or were they 'dress up'/church jeans? Because there is definately a difference.:D

My DH and DS aren't "rednecks", which I consider to be a derogatory word...and they have often worn nice black or beige jeans on formal night...it's Carnival...The Fun Ship!:D They've never been turned away or even had a negative comment made to them. They always look awesome to me!:D

I'm with you mousey. Side note: I may not be a "redneck" but it is definitely a little "pink."

I wear a little dressier than Sunday church cloths on Elegant Evening and usually Capri's on other nights.

I was online this weekend reading the Cunard dress code and after 6pm if you are not dressed appropriately not only are you not invited to dine in the MDR but there is only the buffet and one public lounge that you should be in.

Maybe that's what some of the complaints about people dressing down on Carnival is all about. I frequently on EE go back to my cabin and change into my casual cloths. Or if I decide not to eat in the MDR for EE, I stay dressed casually. But I still go to various bars and hang out in the Casino.

Do many people think that everyone is expected to remain in their EE attire if they are going to be anywhere other than the Lido?

Well, you've gotten several responses to your first question about the dress code, but your second question seems to have been neglected. Will there be a price drop for cruises going out on Memorial Weekend? That's typically the start of summer vacation for many people, and there is probably a high enough demand for cabins that Carnival doesn't have to drop their prices. I would say your chances of seeing a price drop (especially this close to Memorial Day) are slim and none. The only thing you might see is some sort of last minute deal on those few cabins that are the least desirable and haven't been booked yet, due to their location on the ship.

My opinion is that it is each person's vacation and they should wear what they feel comfortable in (within reason of course, no PJ's please!). My husband and I like to dress up a bit each night, he's usually in slacks and a button down and I'm always in a dress (but I am usually anyway, I like wearing them). On the formal nights, he wears a suit and tie and I wear cocktail dresses. However on our Thanksgiving cruise this year, I am wearing an evening gown on Thanksgiving. I don't care what everyone else does, we just enjoy feeling 'fancy' while at dinner. :p

Throughout the cruise industry you will find various dress codes. I think that everyone should sail the line that best fits their comfort level for dress. Sometimes we enjoy dressing more elegantly than other times. We adjust accordingly.

What confuses me is why people seem to get angry at the cruise line for having any dress code. Isn't that part of the cruising experience too?
