Akureyri, Iceland

Recommended Posts

We will be on the Adventure of the Seas sailing from Southampton in late May.

The ship will call at Akureyri, Iceland, on 4th June.

Arrival time - 0830hrs

Departure time - 1600hrs

We have booked a 7 seater car from Thrifty (there are 6 in my party).

The plan is to drive to see the Kralfa Lava Fields (which is 120km away from Akureyri), and then take a dip at the Myvatn Nature Baths, before heading back to Akureyri. If there is time, perhaps we can see something in Akureyri before boarding the ship.

Has anybody done this? Is it workable? Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, if the weather is ok, it's nice just to walk up the hill from the ship, past the church and on past the houses to the botanical garden. It's lovely up there and great to sea the variety of trees and plants. Very peaceful and if ship is berthed where ours was, you can get some great photos of it from up there. Should take 20 mins but will take longer as lots of interesting houses and people walking around.

Myvatn Nature Baths are fun, and more realistic (ok, less "Disney") and cheaper than Blue Lagoon. There's a caldera near there that is a fun and easy (although steep) climb, which is worthwhile. Namafjall is also near by, a set of sulfurous bubbling mudpits which is quite otherworldly.

We did a similar itinerary in Iceland last year. It is very weather dependent. We visited Krafla on a beautiful day and ended up spending longer walking around than intended.

would suggest you do Krafla first then head back to Myvantyn (stop off at the sulphur pots for an unbelievable smell!!). AS long as you don't want to spend too long (more than a hour or so) at each site it should be doable.

We loved Akureyri which was the highlight of our trip. Enjoy!

Thanks. I don't plan to spend more than an hour at each site.
