golferdog Posted May 20, 2014 #1 Share Posted May 20, 2014 How long is the drive from Skagway to Whitehorse? Has anyone done this recently and can you recommend some stop off points? thank you
swoonx Posted May 20, 2014 #2 Share Posted May 20, 2014 Hi, we did that drive last week, you will need 3 hours if you want to drive the whole way. Many people only drive to Emerald Lake and then turn around, because the first part of that way is more scenic (2 hours to go there). We had 2 sections with road work (one in the part behind Emerald Lake) but in general the condition of the street is very good. Where to stop: I bought a guide in the internet, but I did not use it. You will see all interesting scenic points while driving along. Calculate enough time for that, we stopped a lot and took many pictures. Also you should calculate some time for the border controls. (We passed in less than 2 minutes but we had no tour bus in front. They told us we shouldn't go back in the time between 3 and 4 because many tours return in this time.) You should rent a car, the experience is much better than in a tour with many people with a fixed time schedule. I hope I could help you :)
mapleleaves Posted May 20, 2014 #3 Share Posted May 20, 2014 Most people say to allow 5 hrs RT for the drive to Emerald Lake, but it will be dependent on how often you stop and for how long. Emerald Lake is about 75 miles from Skagway. Whitehorse is about 110 miles from Skagway. Check to see if your library has the Alaska Milepost. If so, make copies of the 2 or 3 pg outlining the SOUTH KLONDIKE HWY. It will provide the milepost number for various stops, viewpoints, places of interest, etc It's similar to this guide, but will be more current: http://www.bellsalaska.com/myalaska/klondike-highway.html
