Drinking Culture on Carnival

While not a "short" cruise, a 5-day kinda falls inbetween. On the 3-day cruises, you see people trying to get as much in as possible :P But on the longer cruises, while people still have a good time, it's not the constant party atmosphere. You might see a little of both on a 5-day.

I agree with this, and in Nassau and Grand Turk, there are bars immediately off the pier, so I think these areas are more prone to heavier drinking in port as accessibility is no issue. As far as the ship itself, there are usually "pockets" of partying going on, so you can stay or go. I have seen hot tubs where every single person appears over their limit with another in hand. They hang out there. It can become an issue. My advice if this happens (and you want to get in that particular hot tub) is to get there first the next day! Pools can be the same way, especially when it's HOT and everyone is trying to cool off. Usually this occurs on sea days or right at sail away from ports when many people are already feeling good from port activities and then get a DOD or three.

The culture of drinking is actually a much broader issue in the United States and CCL is no more a booze cruise line than any other cruise line IMHO (Spring Break may be more of a drinking week on any line). I'm sure late May and early June are also higher drinking periods with college students getting out of school, just as they are on land-based vacations.

I think I have seen it all on board. I have probably have been all of these at one time or another. Since I am drinking now, I think I can speak to this cordially, intelligently, soberly, philosophically, stupidly, loudly, obnoxiously (no, I am not an obnoxious when drunk)...

You've got sleepy drunks, obnoxious drunks, loud drunks, think they know it all drunks, "I love you man" drunks, falling down drunks, cordial drunks, happy drunks, weepy drunks, depressed drunks, violent drunks, stupid drunks, sleepy drunks, reckless drunks, philosophical drunks, sleazy drunks, barfing drunks, sober drunks, dancing drunks, I think I can sing drunks, thoughtful drunks, new drunks, the drink more drunks, lying drunks, creepy drunks, lets get naked drunks, fake drunks, best friend drunks, alcoholic drunks, generous drunks, forgetful drunks, the all day drunks, the where's the ship drunks, the fun drunks, the BFF drunks.... and I'm spent.

Did I about cover it?

I have not experienced much in the way of drunks on the ships. We boarded behind a 19 year old girl that took advantage of Cozumel's lax drinking age and was falling down while boarding. Security explained to her that even though the drinking was done ashore, she was now an underage drunk on the ship and escorted her away to be confined to her cabin until she sobered up.

Wow! Deja vu all over again. We must have been boarding the same time as y'all. Saw the same thing with the same warning from Security.

a few memorable moments....the 9 young ladies, all in very small bikinis, pole dancing at the pool and suffering severely th0 enext day on the bus ride to the parking lot.

The guy who pulled his wife's top off to show off her "newly created" enhancements, and being escorted to his cabin where a guard kept him penned up for two days.

To thousands of folks, with drinks in hand, having a great time (I know they were having a great time, my wife told me how much I enjoyed myself the next morning)

The young man we saw was taken by ambulance to the hospital and not allowed to board; she was very lucky she was not kicked off the ship. I hope someone monitored her after that- one fatality from overindulgence is one too many, especially in a young adult just learning how to handle his/her liquor (I'm sure all the regulars here know what I am saying). As a parent of an almost 21 yr old I can say I am terrified of how much he thinks he can safely "handle". Experience is the best teacher, but it can also be deadly.

Our first cruise was an 8 night in October, and it was DEFINITELY an older crowd. Although I will say even most of the older folks had a drink in their hand all day. Haha. But the evenings were very quiet, Our waiter in the MDR said the younger crowd shows up usually in the summer, on the shorter cruises. 8 nights was too much for younger people to get off work/school. So you will probably have a bit of a younger, rowdier bunch.

Our June royal Caribbean cruise was 7 nights, was definitely a lot younger crowd, lots of parties, but also lots of families with kids out of school. A everyone kept it pretty classy though ;)

The only fall down drunks I have ever seen on any ship was always into the wee hours of the morning. I stopped seeing any of it when I stopped hanging out into the wee hours of the morning.

Ditto

I'm somewhere between a cordial and sober drunk. So, if I am drunk, I will be nice to you...

I also think the bar you go to makes a difference. Just got off the Sunshine this morning. A lot of younger party drinkers in the Lido area. Places like the Alchemy bar had the more low key 30-50 crowd. Still drinking and drinking a lot. But more mellow talking and laughing, not loud about it. KWIM. A slightly tipsy 40 year old tends to behave better than a tipsy 21 year old in many cases.

I've been on a lot of cruises and unfortunately, there are some who drink way too much and act like complete morons. Usually, these people buy the "all you can drink" cheers program, so they try to make the most of it.

I understand that one of the people from a cruise that I took last year died from liver damage shortly after returning and they were part of the program. The liver can only take so much.

I do drink and have nothing against it, but it really needs to be in moderation.

Huh? To imply that people that buy the cheers program comprise most of the drunks you are is silly. I'd people can't control themselves they will act accordingly Cheers or not.

As for your assertion that drinking too much on one cruises caused liver damage that killed someone....are you kidding me?

Alcohol induced liver failure takes years...and if one was in end stages they would not be on a cruise. Health would not permit it! Alcohol poisoning

Would be more likely...sheesh

I know that the overindulgence of alcohol on that one cruise did not end this person's life. Unfortunately, she was already an alcoholic before she cruised on this ship. It's sad. And I didn't mean that "everyone" who buys the cheers program is a drunk, but I can see where it could help someone reach that stage. If a person can handle 10-15 drinks a day and still be reasonable civil and not do any bodily harm to themselves, more power to them.

I think you will fit right in on your shorter cruise. When I was your age, I could drink anything and everything. I'm petite and could put full grown men to shame.

However, now that I'm older, though I do like my Friday night martinis, I do not recover like I used to. And as I got older, it became more about taking care of my body.

But you're young...enjoy yourself. Plus I think most people drink a lot more when they are on vacation.

That's the issue. You don't need to have -10 drinks a day to make cheers worthwhile.

And even IF this person was an alcoholic, they would be in no condition to cruise if they were in end stage failure. I watched someone due from such a disease, the progression doesn't work that way.

But kudos to anyone that knew she was an alcoholic. Supposedly dying from liver failure and they just let her whop is up on a cruise and get trashed....
