St. John & Halifax: How Hard for a Tourist to Navigate by Rental Car?

Recommended Posts

We were thinking about maybe renting cars in Halifax and St. John so we could drive around to the places we wanted to see on our own. Can anybody who has done this tell us how hard it is (and how long a drive it is) to get to the key locations of interest in each city?

Driving is no great problem. You may not want to use a car in Halifax as it is pretty metropolitan and there is public transit and easy walks. So far as driving,Canada is great at giving you a driving itinerary for various areas. Get the map and follow it and you will be on a self guided tour. Driving routes in NS,as well as other provinces, tend to be broken up by area or theme. Southern coast is "Lighthouse Route",Northern coast is "Evangeline Trail", etc. I don't know about Saint John.

You would be better off using the public transit, taxies or walking in Halifax. Not only do you have traffic and one-way roads to look out for, parking can be a real problem as well.

Just as a note, pedestrans here have the right-of-way when in a crosswalk. Not like a lot of places where the vehicles have a right-of-way.

Don't know about Saint John. Only been there a couple of times.

We rented a car in Halifax last year. Enterprise was located in the train station right across the street from the pier. We drove to Lunenburg and had lunch in a restaurant right on the waterfront. We then drove to Peggy's cove. There was 4 of us and this was cheaper than doing the excursions with the ship. We had a great time. Very easy to get to.....had maps from AAA before we left.
