Lucky's_mom Posted June 2, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 2, 2014 Hi Can someone please tell me if I can use my cell phone onboard, I'm going on the Eastern Caribbean Splendor. Going to San Juan, I know I can use it there but can I use it at St.Thomas, Grand Turks and Caicos without any extra charges? Thx in advance Lucky's_mom :)
Davey Wavey Posted June 2, 2014 #2 Share Posted June 2, 2014 (edited) St. Thomas and San Juan are considered domestic U.S. rates for all the major carriers. Grand Turk is not. I use free Wi-Fi from Jack's Shack to make 2 cent per minute Skype calls in Grand Turk, but any wifi will do. Lucky's_mom Posted June 2, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted June 2, 2014 Hi Davey Wavey, Thx for your input. I'll definitely keep that in mind. So can I skype or facetime with wifi on the ship or will that be roaming fees? thx
snc_cam Posted June 2, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 2, 2014 if you can connect via wifi on the ship, you can do anything on the internet... though, be prepared for it to be slow and costly.

WiFi runs $0.50 in packages .

Lucky's_mom Posted June 2, 2014 Author #8 Share Posted June 2, 2014 Oh one more question, can you text on the ship without any fees? thx:)
snc_cam Posted June 2, 2014 #9 Share Posted June 2, 2014 text will go through your phone carrier... you would need to check the prices with them and see if Carnival provides for that carrier's service. But in port, you can do it, again, probably with roaming except in St Thomas and PR.
Fitzget Posted June 2, 2014 #10 Share Posted June 2, 2014 If you're all on iPhones, and you have the wifi package, you can iMessage each other over wifi.
Davey Wavey Posted June 2, 2014 #11 Share Posted June 2, 2014 Your carrier probably has cheaper data package than what is on the ship. I found it to be fast enough to easily send messages on Skype, but voice calls were pretty bad...not useless, but bad. I sent messages home and asked if there was anything I needed to call about. Then with free wifi in port were the days I always called to check in with grandma and the kids.
Davey Wavey Posted June 2, 2014 #12 Share Posted June 2, 2014 Oh one more question' date=' can you text on the ship without any fees? thx:)[/quote'] I think the big carriers all have $0.50 to send, $.05 or $.10 to receive per text. This is a good deal if you only send a few.
MrPaulAR Posted June 2, 2014 #13 Share Posted June 2, 2014 You can use the funville boards on carnival site to have a [public] conversation with anyone that knows where to look for free while onboard. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
evanAction Posted June 2, 2014 #14 Share Posted June 2, 2014 Face time and Skype worked "OK" on Freedom's WiFi. At times there was high latency (2-3 second delays). Used text messaging mostly (.50/send SMS, .05/receive SMS Verizon) and it worked to also to text someone else on the ship.
