My research today on the ice caves was such that you can only get there by hiking 6-8 hours or possibly going via kayak (but you need to be experienced). It is too physically demanding for me to consider.

I highly recommend Chilkoot in Skagway. Do the train UP and bus back down. If you go lunchtime or later, you have time to see town while most people are out on their own excursions, and on the way down, you have the luxury of additional time to stop at things like wildlife along the road(we saw a blackbear eating dandelions at the suspension bridge, he was about 20 feet away), the welcome to alaska sign, waterfalls, etc.

 

Doing Chilkoot you get your own car on the train, and often better chance for scenery. Sit on the oft going up the pass. We have done it twice, once on honeymoon, and once with our girls. Fabulous both times. You will enjoy it immensely. Also relaxing!

I think a Denali flightseeing trip the first day is perfect. If the mountain's out, IMO it's flat out the most spectacular three hours you could spend. You could even skip the car that day (thereby saving a lot) and just take a taxi to Rust's on Lake Hood (or of course you can just park it there.)
