Good Grief!! I would be furious with my son (and I have 4--all young adults now.)

Yes, that family deserved being put off the ship but honestly....when we started cruising 9 years ago and we went through scenarios with our boys (no door slamming, no running in the halls, no sitting on the steps or blocking the halls, dress for dinner and meet promptly at 5:50 etc.) ......we didn't dream of talking about what to do if they ran away and the captain and other officers were calling their names over the PA system!!

Guess parents will need to add that one to their list!

I read it was her step child and his father was in attendance. Some type of argument ensued and he left them. Is this true?

Yes this was what the manager told me. The main problem was the extended search and announcements that he would not respond to. Dennis

I read on a different site where the mother posted because she was mad, but apparently her son was caught drinkiing and smoking marijuana.

The boy was questioned as well as his parents. Only after that did Carnival decide to kick off.

So, Carnival was also protecting the other passengers. IMO.

Ccl did the right thing

Hi Dennis :) (original poster)

I agree, it was for the best that the Captain put the family

off the ship. That is the ultimate bottom line here; the Captain

found it necessary to disembark the family.

When a Captain makes a decision such as this, it is not taken

lightly. Many options and alternatives are taken into account,

along with the many possible outcomes and scenarios if he

were to petmit them to continue their voyage.

I of course, do not know all of the facts that transpired; but

whatever took place caused the Captain to put himself into

'Zero Tolerance' mode (so to speak), and disembark the family.

:)

Curious -- how did they determine that the boy was still aboard, and had not jumped over the rail? Did the ship turn around and circle back to it's position at the time the boy went missing? If they didn't, there must have been some assurance that he was still aboard.

If mom had *any clue* who her son had been hanging out with, the customer service or security staff could filter the guest list to males aged 12-20, then scanned through their ID photos. Start with that cabin, right? I would bet that the cabin stewards could have helped identify the boy(s), too, before a door to door search.

This is a pic we didn't know we had until we got home and had a good look at full size. See the kid on the stairs in the bathing shorts? See the Captain and First Mate and local Police Chief (Costa Maya) on the pier talking to him? See the fully armed Mexican Police in the boat leaving the pier? They had just delivered the knucklehead 19-year-old in the bathing suit to the authorities on the pier. The kid had jumped into the water from the highest deck of the Holiday. The Carnival Captain and First Mate are in the process of talking the Mexican Authorities into letting them put the kid in the brig on the Holiday and send him home to his mamma when we got to Cozumel. Fortunately the Mexican Authorities relented and let Carnival handle it. And the kid was, indeed, put on a plane in Cozumel. If the Captain and First Mate had NOT been able to convince the local authorities the let them do that, Knucklehead would have been in a Mexican jail in his bathing suit for heaven knows how long. Sending him home to his mamma was the very best outcome.

Reading the link posted above, I just can't help but laugh at the two most recent complaints:

1) "My son hid and was found and questioned without me and we were kicked off the ship and I'm furious" etc etc etc.

Followed immediately by...

2) "why is it so hard to have pastry at least warm"

LOL!

The second complaint is the more important issue. It may be a recurring problem, affecting thousands of passengers, long into the future. :D

There is Carnival's version of events and there is the mother's explanation.

The facts are likely to match neither although it does appear the captain had every right to boot them off. I remember once stopping the car when our 2 kids started fighting in the back seat and telling them to settle down or they would be walking home. They should be around Denver by now :D

When my son was younger, we had regular check in times (if in ship sponsored events with the kids club- no biggie)when not in the kids club. And did not start that until he was 12. Check in every 2 hrs WITH a curfew. And we ate breakfast/dinner tog ether. One time he missed curfew( he was 14). We grounded him to the cabin the next day- room service etc. I GUARANTEE he never missed curfew again. Must have done something right because he is in his 2nd year at West Point!

A couple years ago they removed several people that were involved in a fight in the Disco and then the hallways..put them off in Costa Maya..two groups from New York

Saw pictures of them standing on the pier with all their luggage. No more Carnival cruises for them......

I was also on this cruise and the captain did mention turning the boat around and missing our Jamaica stop was discussed. I'm sure the camera footage was looked at very closely to see if they could see someone going overboard. I was concerned as many were that he went overboard.

When I found out what actually happened, I think the capt. was generous. I would have found a blow up raft and put them out immediately. Well maybe not, but I did cross my mind. :)

Maybe the kid wasn't hiding , he was just getting a warm pastry out of his secret stash in another cabin.

See there are so many variables to this story :)

Had a West Point WWII vet, POW and future educator very special friend for 40 plus years who was 40 years my senior. Also attended a funeral with closer family members in support of a a decorated man from there who lost his wife of over fifty years (met at high school just before going and married his 2nd year there) the year after my dad lost his and he still can wear his uniform perfectly and did and answers the door to drunk and addicted want to be hunters out here...ready..LOL.

What a perfect "you did wrong" time out..yes you were a wonderful parent and I will always be so impressed by these men and their friendship...2nd one here and much younger. Lost "Buzz" a few years ago...have a complete anthology of WWII and Middle East History from him...

Thanks for sharing and your child's education and service, pride and honor to you all...Sarah

Well its not like you can boot off a minor child in a foreign country without his parents. I agree with the others that there's likely more to the story. Its sad that they couldn't manage to enjoy a week in paradise. It must be total insanity at their home if they can't even hold it together for vacation. I feel bad for them, especially the child.

Who waits until 5am to report their 14 yr missing?

They started looking and paging in the public area around 2:00 am. Paging in passenger cabins 4:00 till 4:30..paging in crew cabins at 5:30 and all crew up at 6:00 to help search. Found him about 7:30 on cabin on deck 1 after starting knocking on ALL cabin doors asking if he was there..Dennis

We were on a Royal Caribbean ship and a group was put off the ship due to drinking and fighting. Apparently a couple of them hit others with beer bottles.

On the Elation several years ago 2 women were heavily fined when the missed the ship leaving Coba. The Mexico Coast Guard brought them out to the ship.

Another time I witnessed a guy being arrested in Ochoa Rios before boarding the ship. Drugs were involved.

I thank the cruise lines for getting these people off of the ship.
