NFL Games on Freedom?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! The Hubs and I are huge football fans and will be on the Freedom for it's 10/19 sailing. Last year, on the Allure, we were able to watch the Pats/Steelers game after Sail Away in On Air. Does anyone know if they show NFL games on the Freedom and if so, where? Lastly, any idea how to find out which game they are going to show? FYI I'm a Giants fan and they're playing the Cowgirls at 4:25 that Sunday and am hoping I get to see at least half of the game. Any other football fans out there that can answer these questions? I am very grateful!!!

They will show NFL games. On Liberty, they showed them on the big screen out by the pool. However, there's no way to know ahead of time which game they will show.

Thanks, Bob! I hope a division game takes precedence! ;)

I was on Freedom last October and they showed the Sunday night game and the Monday night game on the big screen by the pool. You should know which games those are because they are the weekly nationally televised games! I got lucky because The Carolina Panthers was the Sunday night game that week!

Hmmm...I would assume it would be NYG/DAL! The other options are KC/SD and AZ/OAK. I guess I'll find out as it gets closer! Thank you for the reply. Now I'll know what to look for :)

Every year it changes. Last year it was whatever ESPN Caribbean had purchased for replay on cruise ships. In 2013 that was almost exclusively FOX broadcasts which would include the Giants. But as you pointed out you saw the Pats/Steelers which is definitely not FOX, and that may have only because you were in port. The only sure thing is that it has been different every year I've been on a football season cruise.

I have never got a straight answer from anyone on the decision to show a game. There will be a 1:00PM game, a 4:00PM game, Sunday night, and Monday night. That's the ONLY constant. I hope you get the game you want, but in prior years only one game has been shown at a time.

Hmmm...interesting. I know that on the Allure, we watched the game in On Air after Sail Away so it had to be something other than what was only available in port, if we follow your theory. Game started at 4:30 and SA was at 5. Anyway, there are 3 games on at that time, so I'm hoping a bitter, decades old, division rivalry game will win!! Keepin my fingers crossed. Thank you for the insight!!

One cruise we had just set sail from NJ, and were expecting NYJ and Pats. Nope they showed Seattle! The whole thing has no rhyme or reason as far as I can see. You saw three games, I have never seen more than one. The whole thing is nuts!... I wish they would buy NFL Sunday ticket and let us decide what game to watch.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you, as long as you keep them crossed for the Patriots in December.

I was on Brilliance in May and the only sports carrying channel they had was ESPN, so they must change over for football season or out of luck! I have pix from last year of people showing games on big screen.

I've never had a problem catching my games on board. The TNF/SNF/MNF games have all been on the big screen since those were installed. The rest were in the respective sports bars on each ship.

Do yourself a huge favor though, and don't bother asking ANYONE on board except for the person in charge of the stations in On Air. Even regarding the big screen outside. I got all sorts of bogus answers until I talked to that person... and the guy who was that person on my last cruise told me that you should always just ask for the person who actually controls it and not listen to anyone else.

People who like more popular teams than mine shouldn't have any problem at all. Trust me, if I can catch Bengals games and you like (looks like a NYG hat in the photo and you mentioned Pats/Stoolers) a big city team/team with a big ol' bandwagon, you'll be fine.

Man is this ever the truest statement I have ever read. Every bartender on a ship is clueless on the upcoming football broadcasts.

I have learned one thing, it seems the Oasis class ships have much better coverage than older ships.

This is very true. We have sailed a number of Vision class ships during the fall. We have not had much luck in seeing football. DH has been lucky to see one game if he is lucky. :p

Our December 2013 honeymoon cruise on Freedom, they had the Eagles game on in the early afternoon (it was the one they played in a blizzard, which was awesome to see on the pool deck as we only live an hour from there so it was MUCH nicer to be on the cruise!), I know they had the Sunday night game on at the pool deck, and I am pretty sure the 4PM game aired as well. They also showed the Monday night game on the pool deck.

stevru621, I don't know that I can promise ever rooting for the Pats, buuuuut I never want the Hubs (a Pats fan) to be in a bad mood, so I can hope that they won't lose too badly ;) Because the last two I was on were Oasis class, I'm hoping that Freedom won't disappoint!

poncho1973, thanks for the vote of confidence! I appreciate it! I don't wanna be cocky, but I was hoping the bigger city/fanbase would be an influence.

jenfromjersey, hi! I am a Jen and also from Jersey...look at that...lol! I can imagine how amazing it must feel to watch a game played in a blizzard while sippin on a cocktail from a pool deck. Your comments make me feel much more confident about getting to see my game. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone else who commented. I really appreciate the feedback!

Are you saying that only ONE game was televised in the On Air? I have done Oasis twice, but not during football season. And am hoping there is more than just one game televised in the 4pm Sunday time slot.

It mostly depends on which games are on the national feed, not the regional ones, and being in port or out to sea seems to have nothing to do with the selection. We were docked in Boston when the Patriots were playing in Foxboro and their game wasn't shown on board. Usually one or two Sunday afternoon games, the Sunday night game on NBC, and the Monday night ESPN game are shown in the sports bar, On Air, the casino, or on the large screen and usually whatever games are being shown there can also be viewed on your stateroom TV. I believe that the broadcast rights purchased by the cruise line are the determining factor as to which games they can show. If there is a particular game you wish to see, your best option is to set your DVR to record it at home.
