As a comptroller you must be aware of normal market fluctuations. I literally just billed a carnival Cruise for my son and his wife to join my wife and myself and guess what. The same room I boiled it $60.00 cheaper per person. I wonder how that happened?

Hmm, if a ship is moving forward, is smoke going to blow out? Nope, it's going to blow backward. Who is going to notice that? The folks in the cabin directly behind you, who are also trying to enjoy the sunrise with their cup of coffee, without the smell of your smoke.

In all seriousness on our last cruise we got to know our downwind neighbors around day 3. They were surprised to learn we smoked because the woman was "allergic" to cigarette smoke, they had been out on their balcony at the same time we were several times and never noticed.

I believe there is a link to all the price increases and the change in smoking policy. I think they will return to pre announcement levels when the dust settles. Suddenly those thinking of canceling we be giving up now what is great pricing and the savings to downgrade are all but gone. The increase they hope will reduce the anticipated canceled bookings giving smokers a chance to get past the original emothional reaction. In my case the price now pp has gone up $800 pp. Makes me think twice or at least until final to cancel. It's working.

I'll miss the familiarity and the Platinum benefits, but I refuse to pay what I do for suites to not be able to smoke on my balcony and have to run all over the ship to smoke.

 

Canceling what I have booked, as well as moving several groups to HAL.

It would not surprise me at all if HAL does not quickly follow suit. The rumor that an announcement may come next week is already out there. If so, what will you do then? In the past, we have booked a forward suite on NCL that was a mere few steps from the smoking area on the pool deck. Not quite as convenient as your own balcony, but I think some are greatly exaggerating the hardship. As non smokers we have managed to work around the fact that there are smokers aboard. It is not like the whole ship has gone nonsmoking.

I'm angry, well not angry just a bit perturbed by the ban on smoking on your balcony. One thing I take great pleasure in is rising early getting a cup of coffee and having a morning smoke watching the sunrise on my balcony. I will really miss that option. We will not be canceling our cruise on the Getaway but I do foresee a few if not all of our friends doing so. This will be a first cruise for all of them.

 

I can understand and support eliminating smoking within the interior of the ship even the casino, I hate smoke filled rooms as much as non-smokers. I even support designated outside smoking areas but I find it hard to believe that it truly bothers anyone on a balcony with a ship in motion.

 

The fact is you can smell it. Some people are bothered by it and some are not. If you're a smoker you probably won't believe that, how can anyone smell smoke from a balcony on a moving ship? I would have said the same thing several years ago, but then I had a heart attack and had to quit smoking after 30+ years. My sense of smell improved in a short period of time and I understood what others in my family had told me. As a smoker, my house, my car, my clothes, etc. I didn't think had any odor at all. Now, if I'm somewhere where people smoke (or have smoked) I can tell immediately.

You can still rise early with a coffee and smoke, just not on your balcony :-)

I am a smoker. The rule change doesn't bother me. I've never had a balcony, so had to go out to smoke anyway. I'm used to following rules, no problem. What does bother me, and is making me reconsider cruising in the future is that, if the posters on these boards are any indication, I will be stuck on a ship with a couple of thousand self-righteous, judgmental, and occasionally just plain mean passengers. I'm losing the joy of anticipation and the rules don't even go into effect until AFTER my next cruise.

 

The rules have changed in your favor. Huzzah! Now can we lose the vitriol?

That is, that if someone was to try to start a conversation about smoking then a small proportion would join in the discussion, and some (on both sides) would be quite rude. Meanwhile, the vast majority of people will just shrug and get on with their business, maybe listening in and laughing to themselves at the stupid things said (again, by both sides).

 

This is a big issue to some people, but a very minor issue to most.

Just to get back to the OP's original point, my OBC was just doubled to $300 and my price for the Escape Haven H5 hasn't changed a bit. Except that now I can enjoy a smoke-free Haven experience. Thank you SO MUCH NCL!!! :D

While there is medical information about allergic reactions to perfume resulting in headaches, asthma, wheezing, etc perfume does not seem to make any death list of statistics on cause of death in the US. So it does not appear to be anywhere close to second hand smoke.
