mrmac Posted July 16, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 16, 2014 Are there stairs or lifts/escalators to get on the Metro train in Piraeus? Has anyone done it with cruise luggage and would do it again or should we just take a taxi to the hotel for 20-25 euros? Thanks.
kuldalai Posted July 17, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 17, 2014 IIRC the station at Piraeus is a terminal station with the platforms at ground level. So you basically just walk out at street level with just a few steps or ramps to account for the difference between the platform height and ground level. buckeye82 Posted July 17, 2014 #3 Share Posted July 17, 2014 I don't know what ship you are on, but it was a long walk to the metro from ours. And once on it was an uncomfortable ride. First there was the guy playing with a lighter. Then three children got on. Two were playing accordions and the third was yelling something and approaching people for money. Then they got off and went into the next car. A young man got on and started pacing up and down the car talking loudly to himself. We were fine, but I would personally take a taxi next time. Rare Hlitner Posted July 17, 2014 #4 Share Posted July 17, 2014 It is a good mile from the cruise port to the station so this is not a good idea with luggage. A taxi (if you can find a taxi willing to do the short haul) would be the most convenient. There is also a local bus line that you can catch across the road from the port entrance, but not sure you could take anything other then small carry-on luggage on that public bus. edinburgher Posted July 19, 2014 #5 Share Posted July 19, 2014 We did this last month. Azamara Quest was by some miracle the only ship in that day and before we disembarked we could see dozens of taxis at the terminal, so many we could not count them. We took a taxi to the hotel (We were quoted E20 flat fare) The couple in front of us were paying E15. The information lady standing inside the terminal told us to expect E20 as ours was a little further than theirs. She will give you an indication of the correct price before you reach the taxis so you know approx what it should be. Our driver told us that things are so bad in Athens that he was in line from 0500 that morning because there was only one ship and he would probably get only one fare due to the number of taxis in line. If what he said was correct, then it is very unlikely you will get a taxi to drive you only a mile or so to the metro. Having waited that long they will not want such a short ride. We saw a big difference in Athens this time compared to last. The recession has hit hard and many businesses are boarded up. Streets were quiet too with not too much traffic and although the stores in the tourist areas were occupied and fully stocked we didn't see many tourists buying. Cafes and restaurants were the busiest.

Paid for our tickets online $33 ea that were good for two days. Driver dropped us off at the closest stop to our Hotel. The bus has two stops at the cruise port. We also used the Metro to go to the airport when departing. Lifts were available so there should be one at the station near the port.
