Voyager to Norway

Recommended Posts

Jim,

I have not been to Norway, but my husband and I want to go there on a cruise in 2005. Here are some links I have started to save to Norway travel sites and trip reviews. I hope you can access them. I don't know what I am doing as I am trying to set them up as links. Hopefully they will work and you can read them.

We will be on the July 23 cruise ... is that the one you're on? About 25 years ago we did a train tour of Norway and stopped at Trondheim, Flam, and Bergen which are on the cruise itinerary. My main suggestion -- bring a LOT of film for your camera, or plenty of space on a hard drive for digital photos.

I look forward to discussing this with you and anyone else on this cruise.

Did similar trip on another line in '01. The all day trip from Flam to Gudvangen, as described on the RSSC site, was fabulous! Stalheim was gorgeous so I would do the all day, as opposed to just the Flam RR on your own.

In Bergen, we took the funicular up and the views were fabulous. Did that on own.

We did a Norway trip on one of the small Ren ships several years ago and it was one of our fondest memories. Oslo is a great city and don't miss the Vigeland sculpture park but be sure to go with a guide who will explain what the various sculptures mean. Having a guide made all the difference in the world.

We did the Flam RR and loved it but would advise doing it on your own as opposed to through the ship. Our Ren ship was small enough to dock right across from the RR station and I would imagine Radisson's ship would be able to do so as well.

We thought the fjords were the most beautiful things that we had ever seen. We loved Bergen and took the little train around the city. We got to Gudvangen (sp) in the rain so didn't do much from there.

If you have specific questions, I can pull my trip records and try to answer them for you.

I don't know if your cruise goes to the North Cape but don't miss the North Cape at midnight if it does! We were on the Mariner and the captain rotated the ship off the North Cape. It was so light you could see cars and people on the top of the cliff - fantastic!

We took at full day tour out of Bergen. Beautiful countryside - waterfalls everywhere, mountains, well maintained farms - and a nice lunch at Voss.

Thanks for all of the info. We are booked on the above sailing and hope to arrange a way to meet those of you who are going earily in the cruise.

Please keep sending recommendations. I will occasionally repost to this topic to keep it current.

Thanks again,

Jim

Ginny,

The sites are fantastic. You just gave me hours of wonderful research! Thanks! I'll try to return the favor on my return.

Jim,

I know you all will have a fantastic trip!! I can't wait to read your reviews, etc. I might have gone a little "overboard" with those Norway links. I just copied them from my word document. I hope you get something valuable out of them.

My husband and I are thinking of combining a cruise with a land tour so that is why I have so many websites saved.

Anyway, Enjoy your cruise!!!

Jim,

we did it on Marco Polo last year and had a fantastic time. Bet your bottom $ it will be even better with RSSC icon_smile.gif

As everyone says the Flam railway [Norway in a nutshell] trip is not to be missed. We did it with the ships tour [smallish ship] and found it good value for money and organised brilliantly. icon_biggrin.gif

Bergen is lovely and although they say it nearly always rains the sun shone for us [end of May time]. Oslo was great and you can branch out on your own getting the ferry to the Viking museum which gives you much more time than a tour [that's if you are going there].

have fun,

Teresa

We did this cruise last August and it's just as beautiful as others have said. I agree that Vigland Park is not to be missed. We did the RSSC excursion in Flam (the train) and the scenery is breathtaking.

Norway is quite expensive - if you plan to shop much Copenhagen's a better bet. If you are there for dinner try St. Gertrudes Kloster for a unique experience - and the food is wonderful.

As to the stops and excursions, I think other than Flam and Oslo we enjoyed ourselves more just wandering than taking bus excursions. And we skipped the day long bus/train excursions as well - the scenery sailing through the fjords is so breathtaking that I'm glad we stayed on board.

Editing to add link to Flam camera - this is where you dock in Flam.
