cruising cockroach Posted August 1, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 1, 2014 We'll be ending a cruise in Valparaiso. The port website isn't very good and schedules our ship to be at TPS, while other ships dock at TCVAL. The website isn't very good at telling you exactly where you get out of the port. Berths are on the west side of the port while the terminal is on the east side. (see the last link below) Would one presume you're shuttled from the berths on the west and have to exit on the east? http://www.vtp.cl/ingles/ English website has many broken links so the Spanish one is better if you can read it. http://www.vtp.cl/mapas_ubicacion_vtp.html
4774Papa Posted August 2, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 2, 2014 We have disembarked at Valparaiso twice, one in Dec 2010 and in Jan 2014. The port is near the city center. There is a shuttle that will take you to the exit of the port facility. We used Southexcursions for tours and hotels after the cruise, visiting Valparaiso, the Casablanca wine area and Santiago. They will give you an excellent tour. I do suggest you book your own hotels.
cruising cockroach Posted August 7, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted August 7, 2014 Do you know where the cruise terminal is (in the link pictures/maps)? We're looking to get a rental car, and also book a hotel. The decision of car or hotel first would be facilitated by knowing which is closer to the cruise terminal or where one actually exits upon final disembarkation. someotherguy Posted August 8, 2014 #4 Share Posted August 8, 2014 (edited) Click here: https://maps.google.com/?q=-33.043223,-71.608372 The green arrow is on the cruise terminal; it's a long shed and, depending where you emerge, you will be near either the Baron or the Francia station of the Merval (light rail). Zoom in to see these, in satellite view. Right opposite the Baron station, in the L shaped complex with the high-rise at the top, is a branch of Europcar. I've rented from them; they're OK. AVENIDA ARGENTINA 1 LOCAL4 VALPARAISO CHILE Phone: +56 (32) 2257880 Fax: +56 (2) 5983233 Code: VAPC01 You will not want a car in Valparaiso itself (cf. San Francisco). Holly2 Posted December 12, 2014 #5 Share Posted December 12, 2014 We are meeting our tour guide at 9am. What time should we try to leave the ship? We are docking on Sunday Jan 18. There are 10 of us from Infinity. Do you think guest relations would put us all in the same group to disembark together?
sammiedawg Posted December 14, 2014 #6 Share Posted December 14, 2014 Take the shuttle and meet your guide afterward at the terminal. The terminal was a little creepy, lots of dogs sniffing luggage and passengers. Beware of very strict rules regarding taking food off the ship, we were told the dogs sniff for food and drugs. cruising cockroach Posted December 14, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted December 14, 2014 Food is fine as long as it's declared and nothing fresh such as fruit and veg. Not sure about meat. Dogs are no different than arriving in the U.S.
vickie_bernie Posted December 22, 2014 #8 Share Posted December 22, 2014 you have to take a shuttle bus from the ship to the pier building. They fill and leave continuously and the ride is a short one. The port building is not too bad, or at least the one we were at both times. Here is my blog from our visit this year, one of the pics you see the pier building http://vickieandbernietravel.blogspot.ca/2014/03/valparaiso-march-20-2014-third-leg.html This is from our first visit there and there is a picture of the inside of the pier building. http://vickieandbernietravel.blogspot.ca/2012/03/valparaiso.html In many of the South American ports we had sniffer dogs always around at the piers. Chile is very very strict about not taking off any food from the ship. The only food you can take off is if it is in a sealed package. bradshore13 Posted January 5, 2015 #9 Share Posted January 5, 2015 You should try and give an hour from leaving the ship to meeting your guide at the port terminal exit. If you dont have transporte arranged and you are staying at a hotel in Valparaiso you can get a Taxi just outside of the port where they all wait. If you just want a transfer direct to Santiago there is a transfer company in the port just as you pass customs. If you like wine, like i do i would suggest doing a wine tour transfer like what we did with winetoursvalparaiso.cl. Michael is a Brit from London and has lots of knowledge of the Casablanca valley. There are others you can choose from like Uncorked and Chilean Winelovers. If you want to just take a bus to Santiago the bus terminal is 15 minutes walk away.
