Booking Excursion

I am cruising on the Eclipse in a couple of weeks time, one of the excursions I wanted to book on the Celebrity web site stated "Online reservations are not available please check onboard" I contacted Celebrity who advised that this excursion was fully booked but to try on board as they also have an allocation. Has anybody any experience of this or should I book a different excursion before I travel to avoid disappointment ?

We always thought they had an allocation of spots on board but on our Alaska cruise the excursion we were on was listed as sold out in the excursion list given out on boarding. It was a small group excursion, about 12 people, and the others were a family traveling together so maybe that's why.
