considering the AI package

Recommended Posts

Our package was £69 on Majesty last year and £99 on Dream this year.

TBH, 7 drinks a day is not that much. The cocktails are very weak and it is easy to have quite a few on deck and in one of the lounges before supper.

With a meal, it's easy to have a couple of glasses of wine, followed by drinks during the evening entertainment.

Even if you are not a big drinker of alcohol, you pretty much have to have something to drink through the evening, and individual charges add up.

My attitude is that the last thing you want to do is scrimp at the time, having spent thousands to get there. If your deal is £199 and your bill turns out to be £180, surely the extra £20 is worth not having to stress about it.

I never saw any beer packages on dream....unless i missed it...they did have them on majesty but it was so long ago i cant remember a thing about it (i havnt cruised for soooo long that my brain has turned to mush):o

wine packages were 5 bottles (choose from a list) for about £57 (cant remember exactly?)

sorry guys....i'm not being very helpful here am i :o

I like the sound of a water package?? ...but I still think water would be cheaper in the supermarket ashore...(and those brita filters are expensive)

have a great time kalos & mrs kalos...& nell & all you guys who are cruising soon (thumbup)

I think the beer packages might only be on Majesty and Spirit. As Louis run these ships Thomson only really get the profit from selling the cabins, casino etc. Maybe Louis decided to introduce the beer packages and there is nothing Thomson can do about it ;)

ahh...so when they get the new agency on dream, they might get the (maj style) beer packages too (thumbup)

- 35 cans of John Smith & Boddingtons £106

- 35 pints of lager £103

- 7 day or 4 day water packages (no prices shown)

I'm not let anywhere near the cases and once on-board ,thrown out of the cabin whilst Mrs K unpacks .

So I have to explore the bars.... which is fine by me .:D

Ha ha - I used to make DH pack his stuff, but he was so hopeless at it, that I now say to him, put your stuff out on the bed and I will pack it - you men really are clever aren't you?:rolleyes:

Have a fabulous time anyway kalos and mrs kalos :D

I can't remember EVER packing DH's case! Perhaps I'm just fortunate that he spent many years living on his own before I met him so it has never occurred to him to get someone else to pack his case.

I have made him a list of essential items to pack, it's on an A4 card- but he usually ignores it and forgets something.......- once it was his teeth he forgot- I was horrified- till I realised he was just pulling my leg - they were in his pocket!

We must be the exception to the rule as our bar bill is quite a bit higher than £200/£220 quoted by some and were not as nancyneptune put it one of these people who have had their moneys worth and not a pretty sight.I actually find that comment quite condescending

As for being ashore most and all day. There are many who are not ashore most days or all day especially if its a port they have previously visited

Jim, We have been cruising with Thomson for over twelve years and it is only in the past two to three years that we have seen people worse for wear through drink. We have witnessed fights on two occasions, and I mean fights, not arguments. We have seen couples arguing loudly and in one case fairly recently, language so bad, we could hardly believe what was coming out of that WOMAN's mouth. We saw a man sitting at a table with several drinks, and as he stood up, he collapsed to the floor, he had drank so much. I could go on.

We also enjoy a few drinks and I am not really interested in how much or how little other people drink or how much they spend. All I am saying is that people don't want their holiday spoiled by some irresponsible drinkers who feel as they have AI they have to drink to excess, just because they can.

Most of the people on board do drink responsibly, but unfortunately there are a few who spoil things for others. I am pleased that you have not been affected by this type of behaviour.

This forum is called Cruise Critic. It is for people to put forward their own experiences whether good or not so good. To tell it as it is.

I have noticed on a few occasions, there is always someone ready to jump down the OP's throat when some negative points are mentioned.

Believe me I would love to sing the praises of Thomson Cruises at every turn, as we have enjoyed so many excellent cruises with them over the years, but I am afraid things have changed and not always for the best.

Our first night on Thomsons was quite worrying with one particular group (large family) getting quite a few rounds in.

There was, however, nothing untoward before we tucked in, and we never saw any excessive revelry the rest of the week.

We drink more than the medical recommendations but have found that if we have had a lot in a short period of time, the service level drops dramatically. Suddenly, there are no waiters to be seen. I think they are very skilled at knowing how much anyone has had. I am glad to say that I was always bright eyed and bushy tailed at sail-in. Can't say the same for hubby who rolled in from the casino at 3am every morning. On our bill, the casino was put down as one glass of wine each night (a four hour period). I know by the snoring that this wasn't true. :)

One of the things I like about Thomsons is that people can burn the candle at both ends without any antisocial behaviour.

It was true, the AI stops at 2am so his last glass of wine was paid for ;)

If you really get to know the bar keepers they somehow manage to get around this 2am deadline :D

I would hope that if there is any fighting etc those responsible get thrown off the ship at the earliest opportunity, preferably straight away

We didn't get charged for anything. I think the casino is a rule unto itself.

Well said Nancy.

Jim - I don't think Nancy meant to be condescending. I think she was just telling it as she has found it. I have heard a report of someone on IE who was crawling along the floor she was so drunk.

I find these topics quite difficult to read. If you had watched someone die from alcoholic liver disease, I'm afraid you would see the subject from a different angle. I enjoy a drink like anyone else, but I know the dangers of over-indulging and so moderate my alcohol intake. I object to someone saying to me have a "proper" drink if I ask for an orange juice!

imo...

i like (a) beer, i like a glass of wine with dinner but i also like fruit juice

and if people like to drink and enjoy themselves that is fine...its their holiday...i respect whatever people like to do on holiday....as long as all are having a good time...no problem:cool:

but sometimes i do feel that there can be pressure put on you when you decide you dont want to have a drink (or maybe just have one and no more)

i agree with linda....if you order a fruit juice someone will often say...'oh go on have a proper drink/have another'...'you're on holiday...enjoy yourself'...they might as well be saying 'oh well your not much fun are you!'

but if you were to turn that around and say....'oh go on have an orange juice with me....its cheaper and good for you' then.... (well you can imagine what would be said)?

i do sometimes feel that its almost expected that you must have a drink to have fun, to enjoy yourself, to be accepted into the party and if you dont then somehow you are a bit of a boring party pooper or even....a little sinister?

(apologies linda...i know you find these conversations difficult)

Hi Nancy,

Firstly apologies for my somewhat crass comment

We have been cruising for a few years less than you, around 8 years with the last 4 of these with Thomsons and thankfully/fortunately never witnessed what you have. The most we have witnessed has been a domestic with colourful language, the odd heckle in the theatre

I feel those that happen to be on AI(paid for of free) get a hard time on here by some,"its not worth it," "you need to drink X,Y,Z to make it worthwhile","how could anyone consume that amount etc etc" and in general those that are on AI are deemed to be the root of any passengers who are loud, vociferous, rude and so on which isn,t the case.Yes you may well put it down to excessive drinking/one too many but just maybe some of these actions are from those PAYG and not those on AI and again the same applies to those that look the worst for wear

We also enjoy a few drinks and I am not really interested in how much or how little other people drink or how much they spend. All I am saying is that people don't want their holiday spoiled by some irresponsible drinkers who feel as they have AI they have to drink to excess, just because they can.

So do we and I agree nobody wants their holiday spoiled by irresponsible drinkers but again lets not put two and two together and make 5 and put this down to those on AI

This forum is called Cruise Critic. It is for people to put forward their own experiences whether good or not so good. To tell it as it is.

I totally agree this a forum for people to put forward their experiences good or bad and tell it as it is,I have done so numerous times and glad posters are at ease to do so.If I`m being honest if i hadnt found this forum I may never have cruised with Thomsons.Gleaned so much info, the good the bad and the ugly from many helpful and friendly posters convinced us to give it a bash and the rest is history

I have noticed on a few occasions, there is always someone ready to jump down the OP's throat when some negative points are mentioned.

Cant say I`ve noticed that and i,m certainly not guilty of that, well i hope i,m not seen that way.If so I`d stop posting as that is just not me

Believe me I would love to sing the praises of Thomson Cruises at every turn, as we have enjoyed so many excellent cruises with them over the years, but I am afraid things have changed and not always for the best.

So have we and we have also noticed changes over the last few years but not enough(yet)to stop cruising with Thomson

Well said Nancy.

Jim - I don't think Nancy meant to be condescending. I think she was just telling it as she has found it.

Yep Linda,see above

Understand why you would find these topics difficult to read Linda.I`ll leave any response to the rest of your post, thats no for here

passengers are getting silly drunk onboard and causing problems then I would suggest that the policy of allowing duty free to be taken and consumed in cabins is another factor, not only the AI alone.

Thanks WCM a point I was trying to put across

Sometimes the written word does not come over as the poster intended it to ,it's not like talking face to face .

However the one thing that shines through on this forum is how everyone is so helpful and just like Jim says it's the people

off here who drew me into Thomson Cruises and other ones as well .

When and where I can ,I like to think I help people and make them smile and if I thought for one second I was going to upset anyone

then I would never post it , just like all the other posters on here and that's what makes it such a brill site to be a part of . :) you lot are what makes this site .

Now back to the originators post ;) As you can see ,some posters find value in the drinks package's and some may not depending on the cost of the package .

So any ideas Perthorchid ? As I said in an earlier post ..whatever you choose to do , have a great time :).

Catch you guys in a weeks time ... Be Good :) and have a great weekend !

Gosh Jim, I am impressed with all that multiple quoting :D:D

Agree with kalos, it is really up to the individual to decide whether they think it worth their while to buy the AI/DP (whatever it is now called!) Just add up what you spend on your first cruise and see if it is worth having.

Of course if you get it free, that is another matter, though whether it is really "free" is debatable :rolleyes:

On consideration I realise that the reason we get good use from our Drinks Packages is due to the fact that we are back on board by lunchtime every day as Hubby has to rest each afternoon.

Even though, due to his medication, most of our drinks are non-alcoholic the number of rounds can mount up (I enjoy a mocktail or three whilst he is sleeping) and by volume soft drinks are often far more expensive than alcoholic ones.

One thing I hate is to see people drinking to excess and would expect that the crew would have the sense to stop serving someone who is obviously intoxicated. People overindulging do not necessarily have a drinks package however - on a cashless ship it is so easy to order yet another round and just show your card without thinking of the bill mounting up! Thankfully, on our cruises up to now, we have never seen anyone the worse for wear but maybe we have been lucky; fingers crossed we find the same in November.

Bang on the money kalos and I fall into that category. Some are more articulate than others when it comes to putting words down on paper,i`m not one of them.In my mind I know what I want to say but once I start banging on my keyboard what comes out is nothing like what I was thinking or wanting to say.

This is getting like war and peace lol Ai or not Ai but you have got to look at the facts if I book a cruise and I get all inclusive free or for 49 pounds or for 10 pounds a day I am going to take it wether I am a heavy drinker or not if I have to pay full price eg over 200 pounds for the package I would probably leave it so if I am all inclusive it does not mean I am a drunken fall about person it means I got it for a good price wether I drink 10 soft drinks or 10 vodkas a day. People who get drunk and cause trouble and I have seen a couple but not many will be like that wether they are Ai or payg it usually the type of people they are and let's be honest we all probably know someone who falls into this category so just go on your cruise and drink what you want and if you come across trouble makers just let them get on with it and stay away from then

Lol Rant over
