I liked Progreso and will return

Recommended Posts

This was embedded in a different thread a while ago, but thought it was worthwhile fetching out for it's own thread.

Should you get off the boat? Yes!

This advice applies to any port unless you have previously visited and decide not to.

I think it is about 70 +/- miles to Uxmal from Progreso. Chichen Itza is farther. Both are doable in a day from Progreso, but don't think both in the same day would be reasonable.

As usual too many pictures and sadly I guess I need to state (based on caveats of others), all rights reserved..

Zydeocruiser. Great pics. Thanks for sharing. Just a note about the water at Progreso. It is clowdy because it's not the Caribbean. Most of the seashores on the gulf, like the beaches on our Atlantic are the same. I understand it's because of the currents and in the case of Progreso because the shallow water going far out making the long pier necessary. Yep, shrimps is an accepted word. Just as Emeril.

Thanks.

Yes, the caption is misleading. It is the Gulf of Mexico there. The water was not dirty and people and jet skis were in it. A number of (rich) people from Merida have water front vacation homes there. On the other side of the dock they were actively plucking octopi out of the water, it seemed. I like snorkeling and it would not have been possible to see much unless you were on top of it, but otherwise the water is fine.

I had gone on the Carnival excursion - only one bus and it wasn't even half full. It was great.
