Weez Posted August 13, 2005 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2005 Wow what a great experience. Adrianne at Bolero's was spectacular and really made the whole time there very enjoyable. We ended up there every night after meeting him. We also got to see a rescue at sea. 11 Cuban refugees trying to get to the mainland and their boat was sinking. Luckily for them we were in the right place at the right time. They had a mirror and used it to catch someone attention on the boat and the captain turned the ship around and sent out the rescue ship. They took all 11 onboard and met up with the coast guard near key west. It's scary to think what would have happened if it was dark out or if there was cloud cover. They may never have been found. Very happy their lives were saved but sad to think they risked their lives to get off the island only to find themselves being deported.
mamax4 Posted August 14, 2005 #2 Share Posted August 14, 2005 We're planning on be on "YOUR" ship in March and would love a full review of your vacation, with lots of opinions and suggestions. (that's always good for a a few replies!) How was the food? Who's the Cruise Director? Eastern or Western? Have you sailed any other RCL ships for comparison purposes? Let us know the all the dirty little details!!!!
Tra4 Posted August 14, 2005 #3 Share Posted August 14, 2005 When we were on the Brilliance we also had a rescue at sea, with their little dingy type boat sinking. They say it is a pretty common occurance. However, our captain refused to let them on the ship. They tied up next to us, and we gave them food, water, and blankets, & lifejackets. But he would not allow them on our ship. Coast guard then came and took over. Tracey

Tracey Apparently they are not usually allowed on board but the small boat was sinking and there waxs a pregnent woman on board so they took them aboard and transferred them to the coast guard. There were quite a few hispanics on our ship and the cheering and chanting was really nice to see. They cheered the rescue and encouraged the people when they were transferred to the USCG. mamax4, It was our first cruise so its hard for me to compare to anything but i will say a few things. First stop should be to Bolero's and see if Adrianne is working, hes a cant miss and you will absolutely love him. He was going back to the philipines for a 6 week vacation and he expected to return to NOS. Our Cruise director was Graham Seymor and he was excellent and very talented. The food in the main dining room was average at best. Windjammer and jade (the casual buffet) was below average IMO. Portofino was very good and highly recommended. We heard great things about chops as well but we didnt have the chance to eat there. If you have any specefic questions let me know and ill try and help. Have agreat trip. BTW: we did the western caribbean and labadee and grand cayman was great, we didnt do any excursions of any type. In Labadee and Grand Cayman we went to the beach and just relaxed. We travelled with 12 in total and no one really liked cozumel or jamaica but cozumel is supposed to be one of the greatest dive places in the world so if thats your thing you may feel differently. Westie1 Posted August 17, 2005 #6 Share Posted August 17, 2005 We also were on the cruise that saved the 11 people. It was so sad but we were glad to have such a kind crew to help them. Now, the captain is a Canadian man who kept us informed about the rescue. His name is Rick Sullivan. By the way if anyone reading this knows what was discussed between the rescued people and our fellow passengers as the coast guard took them away I would love to know , as it was a very passionate dialogue in Spanish ,I believe. I wanted to let you know we took shore excursions through two really really fun companies. www.phil-lafayette-tours.com in Jamaica , visited Dunn River Falls , intertubed down the White River, toured the city etc, fun, fun, fun. In Grand Cayman, toured with www.Sotoscruises.com they took us to snorkle the coral reefs and Stingray city to play with stingrays. We enjoyed the two guides Billy and Glenn and were glad to not be on an rccl tourgroup jam packed with 30 people to one stingray. With Sotocruises on this day it was just the two of us and the two guides three hours of fun and half the price. Don't miss the stingrays, once in a lifetime experience. Have a blast !!!!!
