Moshewil Posted August 31, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 31, 2014 My mother received a FREE Carnival cruise from our local casino. She has never cruised before and has no desire to go. I even offered to pay taxes and fees and she still will not budge. I have until December 15th to convince her to book. What can I say or do to make her change her mind??? Rare Tapi Posted August 31, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 31, 2014 (edited) Let's start by asking what her reasoning is to be against it. When faced with this kind of dilemma, I try to turn the tables. What if someone tried to convince me to take a vacation that I would never consider taking? For example, what if someone tried to get me to take a free vacation that I won to a dude ranch in Wyoming? (Just for the record, I wouldn't do it, no matter how much someone told me that it would be the vacation of a lifetime) Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app Edited August 31, 2014 by Tapi

T. Advisor King Posted August 31, 2014 #4 Share Posted August 31, 2014 I was kind of thinking the same thing. I never try to "convince" someone to go on a cruise (free or not). For the sake of clarity, the OP may want to confirm what the exact situation is. Is it a free cruise for one or two? If two, who is the second party? I will be the second party of course. I have been trying to convince her to go on a cruise since I took my first one. I know it is something she would enjoy if she would just step out of her comfort zone.
Moshewil Posted August 31, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted August 31, 2014 Can it be transferred to another person? I wish! I already have cruised booked for next year. The few times I have gotten her to try new things, she absolutely loved them. I hear ya. My dad is the same way. It's hard to convince him to get out of his "comfort zone" but when he does, he has a great time. As he gets older though , it's harder to convince him to do things that he's never done before . We've learned to just let him be. :o Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app

Perhaps you could also find someone in her own age group who has cruised before to let her know how much fun it is.
YB Nrml Posted August 31, 2014 #12 Share Posted August 31, 2014 Maybe remind her of the times she encouraged you to try or learn something new, riding a bike, driving, going to a new school. You trusted her at those times now she should trust you because she raised you! ;)

Carnival Cutie Posted August 31, 2014 #16 Share Posted August 31, 2014 How long is the cruise? If it's a short one you may be able to tell her that she won't be away for long, plus you'll be there with her and for her. Showing her pictures could help as well. Lastly, remind her that you wouldn't recommend anything to her that you know would hurt her. Good luck and I hope you'll change her mind. You still have a few months to persuade her.:)

snoopyb Posted August 31, 2014 #21 Share Posted August 31, 2014 Maybe look into the ports and plan activities/things to do & see while there. She may need to see the boat as just the place to sleep to get to what really interests her. Not necc. to try something new but to experience something she's already interested in. She may not be into the "cruise thing" but the destinations & what's there may draw her in.
NOLAbebe Posted August 31, 2014 #22 Share Posted August 31, 2014 (edited) That is exactly how I just convinced MY mom to cruise with me! I basically begged her for mother-daughter time. I told her how important it was to me to build this memory with her, and I assured her I would be there right with her, holding her hand and helping her with every step. If we had to fly, I would fly with her so she wouldn't be afraid to navigate. I showed her pictures of the balcony room I wanted to book, and put her in the room mentally... I said, imagine yourself waking up every morning to a steaming carafe of coffee, the sun shining through our window and the beautiful sea stretching out before you. Imagine listening to your church stuff (she is a Charles Stanley diehard) with your headphones as God's beautiful ocean laps at the boat and lulls you into a deep peace! You don't have to clean or cook. People will wait on YOU for a change. Delicious food. Deck chairs. Ocean breezes. We don't even have to get off of the boat if you don't want to! I told her I would spring for a spa pass so we could lounge and use the therapy pool. AND, and this cinched it... I let her pick the destination. I agreed to travel wherever she felt comfortable, even if I didn't like it. She chose St. Thomas. ("Because it's the United States!"- she is afraid of traveling out of the country.). DONE. I told her I was booking it before she changed her mind! Then I reinforced it by sending her an occasional picture of something she'd like (like the view). Edited August 31, 2014 by NOLAbebe Typos! poolreader Posted August 31, 2014 #23 Share Posted August 31, 2014 I think carnival has a policy that if you do not like the cruise you can get off at the first port. So tell her this and plan a cruise where the first stop is not too far away from the embarkation port. Plan the possible transportation back to the port and let her know this would be her option if she really didn't like the cruise. I'll bet she will not want to get off the ship once she is on board. virginiab Posted August 31, 2014 #24 Share Posted August 31, 2014 If the reason she doesn't want to cruise is because she likes things the same, and doesn't care for things that are different, you might consider only talking about the aspects of the cruise that are just like similar experiences she has enjoyed. So the dining room is just like (name of her favorite fancy restaurant). The slots area in the casino is just like (one of her favorites at home). The cabin is just like that cute place you all vacationed in (some year, some place). The beaches will totally remind her of that time you went to (name of beach). Etc. Then stick to your story and stop emphasizing the different parts of the experience, because that may be all she is focused on. Good luck!
elainmir Posted August 31, 2014 #25 Share Posted August 31, 2014 Our number 1 reason for cruising as a family is to have family time. To make those memories! Hey ya only go around once and none of us is guaranteed tomorrow so do it while you can! Tell your mom you want to make those memories with her! ;) And the bonus is IT IS FREE...tell her how much others would be paying for the same cruise! Free is totally the time to try it! :D Hope she gives in and ya'll go!
