To tux or not, that is the question...

Recommended Posts

Hi there - my DH is having a battle with himself over whether to rent a tux for our 7 night Caribbean cruise aboard the Zuiderdam.

This will be his first cruise and is worried that he will be the ONLY gentleman in a tux. He likes the fact it will be waiting for him in the stateroom as we are flying in and wrinkles in his dark suit may be an issue.

From what I remember, on my first cruise last year, I felt awfully underdressed and do remember men in tuxes. Each formal night I will be wearing a long gown.

Thanks!

All I can say is, it is better to be over-dressed than under-dressed. My old boss took the Zuiderdam last year and he said all of the men were in tuxes.

I would love it if my DH would wear a tux. The only time I've seen him in one was at our wedding and when he has been a wedding attendant. The plus side would be not having to haul all the suit stuff with us, that would leave more room in the garment bag for me!

Just make sure his measurements are written down correctly before you order it.

Have a great cruise!

If he's willing, go for it! The pictures will be great lasting memories. Who knows, if he enjoys the experience, he might buy one. Then he'll be "forced" to take you places where he can wear it.

I say go for it. My DH is probably going to buy one, and he's actually looking forward to it. We don't even dress up for work in our professions (I work in a hospital in scrubs all day, and he is in business casual in a school), so I think to dress up (way up) on occasion is a great thing!

Tell him to BUY a tux. Renting costs about $100 each time. This may be his first cruise, but I doubt it will be his last. Don't waste your money borrowing used clothes.

You can buy a tux retail starting at about $150, online starting at $50, or second hand (same as renting but you keep it!) $20.

He can get by in a dark suit just fine, but since he really wants to wear a tux, he'll be VERY disappointed if he doesn't take one and sees so many other guys dressed the way he wanted to.
