Gary K Posted September 8, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 8, 2014 (edited) I'll be in Buenos Aires from 8 am to 8 pm and am looking for a tango show. I'm more interested in something that I can watch while eating lunch, because frankly my time in BA is so limited and I'd like to see as much as possible. I will be in the area of the downtown (near the Obelisk) and Recoleta mostly, and of course the port. Therefore, I also won't be anywhere near La Boca, unfortunately. From what I can see, almost all tango shows start around 8 or 10 pm, so I know it's probably unlikely to find something like this—yet I am still optimistic! Any good suggestions on where I would find something like this? Edited September 8, 2014 by Gary King

Confiteria Ideal located in downtown on Suipacha street has an afternoon milonga (5:30PM) on Saturdays. Not a bad choice if this is your day of the week to be in town. Otherwise, the best option if you really want to see Tango is to catch a cab to la Boca.
4774Papa Posted September 11, 2014 #3 Share Posted September 11, 2014 We did Tango Porteño Here is what my B and B provided me. There are a fluctuating number of large tango shows in Buenos Aires, and they all can provide a great night out – with dinner (wine and beer usually included), a big show with live music, and often a free ‘tango class’ to get you in the mood before it starts. Most also include mini-van transport to and from the show in the price. And if you don’t want dinner, most offer ‘show only’ tickets at a reduced price. Here are five. Most of our guests go to Tango Porteno but the Carlos Gardel show is also good. Both are reasonably close to our casas. Although shows offer transport, that can be quite stressful waiting for their minibus to arrive, so being able to get there easily on your own is always a plus. · Tango Porteño Cerrito 570, El Centro (next to Teatro Colon) Tel 011 4124-9400 Dinner: 20.30 Show: 22.15 (90 mins) http://tangoporteno.com.ar · Piazzolla Tango Florida 165, El Centro Tel 011 4344-8201 Dinner: 20.45 Show: 22.15 (90 mins) http://www.piazzollatango.com · Rojo Tango (Faena Hotel) Martha Salotti 445, Puerto Madero http://www.rojotango.com · Esquina Carlos Gardel Carlos Gardel 3200, Abasto Tel 011 4867 6363 http://www.esquinacarlosgardel.com.ar · Boca Tango Brandsen 923, La Boca Tel 011 4302 0808 http://www.bocatango.com.ar · Señor Tango Vietes 1655, La Boca Tel 011 4303 0231 http://www.senortango.com.ar
dr__dawggy Posted September 11, 2014 #4 Share Posted September 11, 2014 Do any of those offer an afternoon show, which is what the OP was asking about.
4774Papa Posted September 11, 2014 #5 Share Posted September 11, 2014 Do any of those offer an afternoon show, which is what the OP was asking about. I believe that afternoon shows do take place, but they sell out quickly.
Gary K Posted September 12, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted September 12, 2014 (edited) Thanks. I don't think a tango show is realistic for me then; the norm seems to be for shows to start around 10:00 pm, which is really late, even if time were not an issue (I'm often dead tired by midnight). Perhaps I'll take a quick visit to La Boca instead if I have a chance; it's a bit out of the way, though. cirman52 Posted September 12, 2014 #7 Share Posted September 12, 2014 How are people dressed for seeing the shows ? Casual or coat & tie ?
4774Papa Posted September 12, 2014 #8 Share Posted September 12, 2014 We dressed up a bit for the Tango show. I wore a sport coat and tie. I understand the lateness of the hour, but it is worth going. La Boca is a bit out of the way, but I recommend going in the daytime. The area around La Boca is not a good part of the city to be in at night. La Boca should be OK at night, but don't wander too far.
