BAYONNE, N.J. (AP) - Motorists who use the Bayonne Bridge will need to find an alternate route.

The bridge will be closed this weekend while construction crews remove portions of the structure and lift large steel and concrete sections of the bridge.

The bridge will close from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. The Port Authority's free weekend shuttle service will only operate on Friday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Motorists should consider using the Goethals Bridge.

The closure is part of a $1.3 billion project to raise the roadway to give larger ships access to New York and New Jersey ports. The new bridge roadway will have wider lanes and a median.

The span connects Bayonne with Staten Island, New York.
