Places to visit between Germany and Warnemund

We are sailing the Regal Princess (Scandanavia & Russia itinerary) on June 29, 2015 from Warnemund. We will be arriving in Berlin on 6/24 and wanted to spend a few days there and then maybe visit another city en route to the port. Our travel agent recommended Hamburg but we were curious what other options existed?

 

 

Also, we were wondering if anyone had recommendations for where to find good Ampelmann souvenirs in Berlin. The last time we were there, the ones found tended towards the cheap variety.

Northeastern Germany is one of my favorite regions in Europe. I presume that you have a car for exploring. We spent a week in this area and enjoyed visiting Teterow and Neubrandenburg. Both are historic small cities that retain their character and charm. Teterow is wonderful just for strolling. Neubrandenburg has a great museum within its historic and intact exterior wall. Both towns are very traditional and not touristy. Try to allow enough time for a walking tour and some local food. Visit a chocolate shop and a cutlery store. We even went to a hardware store and looked at tools and Hans Grohe faucets! Stop for a beer (bier!) and toast the day (prost!).

I'd also recommend a restored small castle hotel near Neubrandenburg - Burg Schlitz. Even if you don't stay there, it is worth a drive through the surrounding countryside. The hotel has a great restaurant. There is also a many centuries old hunting lodge style restaurant across the road from the Burg Schlitz main gate.

Don't miss the Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin.

Explore Wismar and Ludwigslust which are right in the area of Warnemunde. There is also Schwerin with its nice castle and gardens. Get a fish sandwich along the quar in Wismar from the fishing boats, its a lot of fun and then sit and enjoy it near the city gate.
