When are you going? Are you going to have transportation or are you using shuttles/taxis? As far as distance...its not very far as the island is not all that big. But the pier is on the ocean side (south) and the port is on the north side (between the island and the mainland).

Hotels and restaurants...."GalvestonCruiser" has posted hotel and places to eat on here numerous times. Just search the threads and I'm sure you can ring one of her lists. (others have posted lists as well, but she lives down on the island and has been a good source of local up to date info)

Just FYI for anyone interested and going soon, the Groupon for Landry's dining/Pleasure Pier is still available. For $80 you get a $50 e-gift card for any Landry's restaurant (on the island that would include Landry's Seafood, Saltgrass Steakhouse, Bubba Gump, Fisherman's Wharf, Willie G's, Fish Tales, Rainforest Cafe, and more) and two all-day ride passes to the Pleasure Pier (which are normally $26.99 each.)

http://www.groupon.com/deals/landry-s-inc-galveston-island-historic-pleasure-pier-and-kemah-boardwalk

The e-gift card is actually good at any Landry's restaurant anywhere, not just on Galveston, and never expires. The Pleasure Pier passes must be redeemed by October 20th.
