Algebralovr Posted September 23, 2014 #3 Share Posted September 23, 2014 Your iPad will be fine in most instances, however please keep in mind that you are working with slow data transmission speeds to and from the satellite. Also, when there is cloud cover, the ship may have very little signal. On Equinox in June, we had a couple of days when we didn't seem to have good connection. But for some in the past that has been an issue because they have forgotten to go thru all the steps of logging out from the Celebrity Onboard Network Or left their device (such as a phone) on roaming / wifi Internet enabled. Too many CC Celebrity Cruisers have ended their cruise with a SHOCKING :eek: SeaPass Bill waaaay into the Hundred$ of Dollar$ Personally, we don't use the Internet when aboard. We bring our IPad and check our email accounts when we are ashore... There is often FREE wifi at a Port Terminal / Shopping Area / Coffee Shop / Internet Cafe / Bar or Restaurant. And land based service is waaaay more reliable & speedy than on the ship... So you can get more done faster. Cheers! If soYou will have several consecutive sea days. If you decide to buy some time you might choose to check your email once or twice each day. After downloading your email disconnect from the ships internet. Reply to your emails off line, and connect to the ships internet just long enough to send your replies and new emails if you have them. That is pretty painless. People who feel they have to be connect to work or surf the internet can run up pretty big bills. Also if you are "elite" you will receive free minutes. "select" gets 25% off. "classic" 10% discount. They do warn you that the speeds will be slow, but this was unbearable slow. Last night, I could not establish a secure connection to check-in on the jet blue website as I kept timing out. I spent over 20 minutes, and almost $10 worth of internet time, trying to get our boarding passes with no success. It took 10 minutes for gmail to load in basic HTML. And we were off the coast of Alaska. We loved the cruise, and would definitely do Celebrity again, but would not pay for the internet. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Lsimon Posted September 23, 2014 #11 Share Posted September 23, 2014 The internet connection is through a satellite connection shared by all passengers and probably also shared by the ship's systems for their internal uses. The service is often excruciatingly slow and sometimes there is no signal at all. Since the connection is shared by all users on board it is the slowest when the largest number of passengers are using it such as afternoons on sea days and fastest in off times such as very early in the morning or very late at night.
