WeirdEyes Posted May 12, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 12, 2004 I took my size 14 formal to get altered last week because it was too big, especially in the upper part. I picked it up yesterday and now it is very snug. It looks great standing up, but once I sit down, I can barely breathe. Should I get it let back out or suck it up? I haven't gained ANY weight. I think she just took it up too much. What would you do? <MARQUEE> Shelia </MARQUEE> Sailing the Mariner in....... happysinglemom Posted May 12, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 12, 2004 Yep - I remember that happening to me once too. If you can have it let back out I would - unless you are trying to lose weight anyway. In that case, this would be some motivation! Adventure of the Seas will be our maiden cruise! Scarlett Fever Posted May 12, 2004 #3 Share Posted May 12, 2004 Take it back ! There is nothing worse than being in too tight clothes. Besides, if the alterations place took it in too much they should stand by their work and fix it.
WeirdEyes Posted May 12, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted May 12, 2004 I have actually lost about 55 lbs and plan on losing at least 10 more so the dress would be perfect after I lose the rest of my weight. I just don't want to be miserable while wearing the dress on the cruise. I have another dress and tried it on last night and it was WAY too big so that one is out. The first dress is brand new. I bought a larger size than I usually wear because I ordered it off of the internet. I figured it would be easy just to have it taken up if needed. Mistake! <MARQUEE> Shelia </MARQUEE> Sailing the Mariner in....... WeirdEyes Posted May 12, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted May 12, 2004 Yes, I'm thinking of taking it back and having it let out some. When she pinned it, it was perfect. I think she just took in in too much. I haven't gained ANY weight. Thank you both for your advice. <MARQUEE> Shelia </MARQUEE> Sailing the Mariner in....... nosnobunny Posted May 12, 2004 #6 Share Posted May 12, 2004 I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but as a person who sews I can tell you that it all depends on the fabric. Most evening fabrics cannot be let out without the stitching line showning. Sorry Sheila. WeirdEyes Posted May 12, 2004 Author #7 Share Posted May 12, 2004 Beth, I know you are right! I was examining the fabric last night it does appear to be a fabric that will show the stitching. I guess I'll just have to suck it up. I'm not going to buy another dress because frankly, I don't want to waste the money. I'd rather spend the money in port on something nice like jewelry! LOL Thanks so much for your help. On my last cruise, my dress that is WAY to big now was really tight also so I guess I can live without breathing for a couple of hours. WeirdEyes Posted May 13, 2004 Author #9 Share Posted May 13, 2004 Maria, I have a bra/corset that I plan on wearing with it. I still won't be able to breathe though. Hopefully, I can lose another 2.5 lbs before the cruise and it will be a tad looser. Thanks for all of your suggestions. Liztoybiz Posted May 21, 2004 #10 Share Posted May 21, 2004 Sheila, I feel for you, as I (and probably many of us)have been in this same situation before...uggh. The only suggestions I would offer are to be sure to drink lots of water that day to keep flushing things through, and to wear that formal for the first formal night. Is your cruise a 7 nighter with the formal night the 2nd night on board? Congrats!!!! And have fun on your cruise!
WeirdEyes Posted May 21, 2004 Author #11 Share Posted May 21, 2004 Ladies, I have lost 4 lbs since I first posted this, so hopefully the formal will fit a little looser. I'm going to try it on tomorrow. I've been too busy this week to try it on. I do plan on wearing it the first formal night, which will be on Monday. Since the cruise starts on Sunday, I should be ok. Thanks so much for all of your support. kbt2 Posted May 21, 2004 #14 Share Posted May 21, 2004 I would definitely take it back. She should have also had you sit down while she had it pinned to make sure "sitting" was comfortable as well. My seamstress always does this.
