While in Cozumel, I would like to buy an embroidered Mayan dress (huipil) and was wondering how much I should budget. Are these widely available, or do I need to seek out a clothing store? It does not need to be heirloom quality. Thanks!

Hipil prices vary depending on the type of hipil it is, and the type and quality of the embroidery.

Basically there are two types of hipiles, the HIPIL and the TERNO . The huipil is the pledge daily , is simpler , the terno is the evening dress three pieces. To be prepared , the terno are more expensive.

to see photos, you can google "yucatecan Terno photo" and "yucatecan Hipil photo"

prices:

Hand embroidered huipil - Between $ 3,000 and $ 4,500 pesos , depending on the amount of embroidery.

Hipil machine embroidery - can be found from $ 800 to $ 1,500 pesos.

Terno hand embroidery - Between $ 9,000 and $ 12,000 pesos , even little more.

Terno machine embroidery - can get from $ 3,500 pesos.

you can buy it at the women clothing stores inside El Mercado

exchage rate aprox USD$1.00 X $12.50 pesos
