Toenail Polish

Recommended Posts

I have faced reality and accepted that after many decades under cover my toes are no longer going to be in hiding. Sandals, no hose. Frankly, those tootsies look awfully bare.

So I've started looking a photos. This is not going to be easy--I am not the fuchsia footsie type and my little toes are real runts--about 2/3 the size of most little toes with a toenail that is about the size of a punctuation mark plus it is positioned vertically rather than lying down like any decent toenail would. I don't want my toes to be the center of attention at social gatherings.

Now this is probably more information than you really wanted, but it is background for my question. The most recent Talbots catalog has a lot of bare feet without colorful toes, but I am suspecting that that doesn't mean they're unpolished.

I'm not a kid (that means I'm over 50) but trim with nice legs (I've been told by a 20-something, "For a woman your age, you have great legs." :-) ), and understated elegance is the style I'd like to be. What's the going trend on toenail polish? Clear? Light beige? Other?

As a 50+ I like to stay away from fire engine red, etc. and go more with a neutral (beige tone) lightly frosted polish. It gives a finished look to your toes without saying "look at me". OPI makes a color called something like Fiji Wiji Fawn that is neutral. I've worn this look for the past couple of summers and have had compliments on my toes. Also, it goes with everything and doesn't fight with your fingernails if you use a color there. A look that I've seen a lot of lately is french nails for feet, a look I don't personally care for.

As a 30 y/o gal, I get a pedicure once a month and a weekly manicure. I love the look of a french manicure on toes. I tend to lean towards dark reds myself, but I still love french on the toes and hands, very elegant. Just my opinion

I am a 40+ gal, and just had a pedicure yesterday, I chose the French look for my piggies, and I just LOVE it!
It really does look very classy and matches my fingers too!

I'm 19, however, my mom is almost 50 (she said I could say it ) and I told her to paint her toenails with OPI Greek Isles (magenta pink). I talked her into it well more like I sat her down and painted her toenails. If you have great legs you might as well have fun!

Oh they do pedicures on the ship also!

I absolutely love to get pedicures! Once a month, more frequently in summer. If you have a significant other, why not ask their opinion regarding color?

While not being a fan of the French pedicure, (most of them look like their toenails need to be trimmed) that may be the answer for you. Ask the nail technician if they will make the free edge (white part) a little narrower, not so obvious "French". I know a woman who has this done and it looks a lot better, at least to me.

If you choose to get a pedicure on a ship, be prepared to spend more than twice than a land based service. I always get mine done the day before I leave on my cruise.

Although I don't care for pedicures (just don't love someone mucking around with my feet), I do like to get a polish change at the salon because it seems to last longer when they do it.

I also don't care for the look of a French pedicure. How about a light to medium pinky-peach, that would be neutral and have color, but not call as much attnetion to your toes as red or other dark/vibrant color?

M/R The beauty of nail polish is you can change it any time you like, so EXPERIMENT! Go for a great pedicure and ask the tech. to try a few different colors on your toes. Do anything from mild to wild. Sometimes I like french, sometimes darker or flashy. Have fun with it

My toenails aren't long enough for a french manicure, so I go with color. The first time I had them done, I was very leery about colored polish, but having a professional clean up your cuticles really makes a difference. She talked me into a very bright pink and I've been using wilder and wilder colors ever since.

The best time to wear wild colors is on vacation. Unless you are wearing sandals on formal night, Go CrazY! If you are, get a color that goes with your formal(s).

MysteryReader,

There's nothing uglier than a pair of non-pedicured feet in a pair of sandals! A pedicure does more than just put a coat of polish on. Have one and you'll see the difference.

As to color, that's a personal choice. If you feel you don't want to draw too much attention to your toes, then select an elegant white-ish, pink or beige color - whichever one looks prettiest with your skintone. I have pale white skin and red looks best on me. I use Opi's "Kennebunk-port"

Personally I think french pedicured nails are ugly, but that's just my opinion. I know that many people like that look. But one thing is certain, if you want to take attention away from your toenails, don't go french!

I wouldn't advise waiting for the cruise to do it. Along with it being twice as expensive as on land, you might not be able to get a spa appt the first day or at all!

Now I'm really going to show my ignorance of nail-icure. What's a French manicure or pedicure? Other than my mother when I was a baby, I'm the only one who has ever done my nails. I use my hands a lot on my job so I keep my nails short and unpolished. See, I'm really naive.

French manicures are done with a very pale pink or beige polish, but on the edge, where your nail is white, a white polish is used. The idea is for an enhanced natural look, but on some women it doesn't turn out that way. You see them more often in the summer. It is also a look that a lot of brides use, so that their nails don't take attention away from THE dress. Take a look at a bridal magazine next time you are in a market.

If you don't have much white on your nails, a French manicure would not be the best choice, IMHO.

I just got my first pedicure last night and am happy I did! My toes/nails look so nice. For an age reference, I am almost 30. I went with a coral color, OPI Melon of Troy. I hope it will look ok with my navy dress and other items for the cruise. I did my toes and fingernails in the same color. HTH.
