How dark is "dark"?

Recommended Posts

When the dress code for formal night says a "dark" suit for men, does that mean black or can it also be a charcoal grey or navy blue? DH is trying to decide if he should rent a tux or buy a new suit. If he buys a suit, he would want to get one he can also wear to work, and black wouldn't do.

BTW, we will be on the Golden Princess on Oct. 3.

Thanks,
Ginny

IMO, I define dark as black. I do not think a grey suit is formal enough for the dining room on formal night. JMO

A black suit is very crisp and clean looking and the gentlemen look stunning in a jet black suit!

I agree with you JanetMarie, but if he decides not to rent a tux and to buy a new suit instead and feels that he cannot wear a black suit to work or will get enough use out of it, then I think a nice new dark grey or navy suit would not look out of place. Personally though, I really don't think a black suit is out of place anywhere. It all depends on how it is accessorized. Sissy

Hi!

I just got off the Golden Princess and a Navy Blue or Dark Gray suit would be just fine! Saw lots of very sharp looking men in them escorting very sharp looking women! Have a blast! You will love the Golden!

Darker is better, but charcoal or navy is fine.

How about buying the tux? It will cost less in the long run if you cruise again. The cost to buy is about the same as renting twice. He can wear it for special occasions around town too. Would you like him in a tux for your anniversary?

While black looks sharp, navy blue or dark charcoal gray will also be fine.

Thanks everyone for your answers. I will have DH take a look at your responses when he gets home. I guess we hadn't thought about buying a tux. However, after reading these boards for the last couple of months I'm sure we will be hooked and this will not be our last cruise!

Even though I'm usually a fuss-budget about dress codes, I think dark charcoal or navy would be just fine.

I have worn a charcoal grey suit on cruises before and have always felt very confortable in it.I plan to wear it again this summer.

On our recent cruise on the Mariner, there were plenty of Navy and dark gray suites on formal night.

They did not look out of place, we were all looking at the guy in the bolero and cowboy hat.

We bought my husband a tux - it was even his idea ladies (!) - but there were men in black, navy, charcoal grey suits, even some in sportscoats with dark slacks. We had expected formal night to be very different than semi-formal (or informal as Celebrity calls it) but a lot of people treated them the same. It could have been our area of the dining room, but I think you should decide what makes sense for you and have a great time!

Cheers,
Carol

My DH bought a nice black sport jacket that he wears with comfortable black slacks. It has the over-all look of a nice suit. With different shirts it dresses up or down. Formal nights brought out the tuxedo style white shirt and bow tie and looked great and semi-formal nights brought out different colored shirts with coordinating ties. Some of those shirts are short sleeved also for extra comfort in the warm weather zones. The jacket also looks good with grey or tan slacks.
