Ship Salon Question.....

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Do any of you have an opinion about the haircutters on the ships. I've had waist-long hair since elementary school and am considering a major change. I thought it might be nice to get it done on the ship for one of the formal nights.

Any thoughts? I know it will be more money on the ship, but what do you think about the quality/skill? Should I not risk it? or are they actually very good stylists?

Thanks so much!!!!

I would imagine that the stylists expertise is variable from ship to ship. I would be more concerned with how you would feel about having your hair cut. I understand it is quite traumatic for someone who has had long hair all their life to have a major hair change. I think if you are contemplating this you should do it before you go so you can get used to it and learn how to style it or wait until you return. What if you didn't really like it, it might ruin the rest of your cruise, or at least your formal night would not be up to expectations. I know that I am not in a good mood when I have a bad hair day. I don't think I would chance that. Sissy

The best thing about hair is that it grows back and the difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut is just two weeks. I think it depends on how short you want to go. For a very short style, I might go to a hairdresser on land two weeks before just to get used to styling it. On the other hand, if you want to go shoulder length or a bit longer, then I'd go for it. It would be still long enough to put up in a ponytail or twist if you absolutely hated it.

Yikes! A touchy subject for me. I can't tell you how many times, as a hair stylist, I was faced with this scenario.

My advise would be to go in stages and go to a stylist recommended to you. This is a very big change, if you hate it you will need a few days to cry, I would want to do that at home.

The worst for me was a young woman who wanted her hair considerably shorter, her hair was beautiful. I tried to talk her out of it, she was adamant, so I cut it (actually left it about 3 inches longer than she asked), she left my salon in tears. Do you know what she said through her tears? "It's so short!". A bad hair cut can last longer than 2 weeks, I cut my own bangs 2 months ago, I must have been sleeping, because it took this long to get them back the way I like them! Never have I done that to myself before.

Melissa,

Listen to Kathy, she's a professional in the field.

If you're considering a *major* change, don't do it with someone on a cruiseship and don't do it so dramatically. Take baby steps.

Ask around and find a stylist you can trust. Go in for a free consultation and then think about it a day or so. Don't go shorter than shoulder length at first. Live with that for a few weeks or months and then decide how much more to take off.

I'm all for getting away from your schoolgirl looks into something more grown-up, but you're not talking about a trim. If you hate it, you'll be unhappy for months. And if you do it on a cruise and hate it, it could ruin your whole vacation. Why risk that?
