Crown Princess arrival in San Pedro delayed 24 hours

It's about 340 miles between Cabo and Puerto Vallarta. Your guess is probably correct. Good chance either Puerto Vallarta or Mazatlan port stops will be affected.

If they can reschedule, they might ditch Cabo since it's still in a state of repair/recovery???

Nor is it something Princess has control over. Legally (not to mention ethically), they are required to take all actions to ensure the health and survival of a passenger. It's a similar scenario to when they are asked to participate in a search for a man overboard. Or even if they are delayed into a port due to weather.

In short, there is no 'decision' to be made or anyone at 'fault'. It just is.

I'm not sure why it isn't a Princess problem? It's not the fault of the passengers waiting for the ship to arrive.

Possible, yet Cabo is right on the way. While Cabo still has a long way to go in recovery, 2 weeks ago the majority of the usual tourist shopping and excursions were going as usual. As far as the hotels and resorts, only a limited number of guests around. Of course, no one knows what Princess will actually do until we receive their email with an updated itinerary.

And of course our tourist 'spend' will help them along in financial recovery :)

Yes, they need us more than the other ports. I vote for not skipping Cabo.

I'm talking about insurance here. I was responding to Pam's post saying there was no "Princess problem." If there is a claim to be paid, something or someone is "at fault." Insurance--not legalities or ethics.

Insurance is different than a Princess Problem. Even if you bought insurance via Princess, its handled by a different party and subject to the terms of your policy. Princess, as a cruise line, still has no liability for compensation other than what they choose to provide, which may be influenced by THEIR insurance (nor are they obligated to pass on any claims).

Also, there are many types of no-fault incidents covered by insurance, the most common being storm damage to otherwise sturdy structures as an example.

IMPORTANT NOTICES

CROWN PRINCESS - EMBARKATION DELAY

Please be advised that Crown Princess' return to the Port of Los Angeles has been delayed due to an extreme medical emergency. Embarkation

for your cruise will now occur on Sunday, November 16. Out-of-town guests with independent air should either reschedule their flights, or

arrange for accommodation for one night in Los Angeles. All guests will receive a one-day per diem in recognition of the missed cruise day and

to offset any extra expenses incurred. Due to the delayed departure, we will no longer call to Puerto Vallarta on Tuesday, November 18. In light

of the revised itinerary, all guests will receive a refundable credit of $50 per person applied to your onboard folio, as well as a Future Cruise

Credit of 20% of the cruise fare paid, which can be used on any future Princess cruise booked before the end of 2015. Please disregard the

attached itinerary, which does not yet reflect these changes.

Additional embarkation time details will be provided as they become available. We look forward to welcoming you aboard Crown Princess.

Thank you for your attention to this notification.

My point is that the "fault" wasn't due to anything mechanical or the operation of the ship. If there was a fire onboard or one of the engines not running, then it would be a Princess liability and they should make the passengers "whole" and compensate them for any expenses and/or inconvenience.

Since it's not a Princess liability, then that's why you get insurance. :) Whenever you board a ship, there's always the possibility of something happening. On the Royal in September, we had a "man overboard" the afternoon before arriving in NYC. As it turned out, it was a false alarm but it took two hours for the ship to turn around, lower a rescue craft, and do a head count. If it had been a real emergency, we probably would have arrived late in NY.

Ah, now I see. So the people who were late for their connecting flights and had no insurance are just stuck unless Princess decides to be kind and help them out. Even though it was Princess' procedures that caused the problem, they are not obligated to compensate. I guess that's one more good reason for insurance.

From what I understand, Princess will pick up airline change fees for those disembarking passengers that didn't have Princess Air. And they are providing free internet time so people can make those changes...

Hi All,

My husband and I are on the delayed cruise leaving port on Sunday the 16th, first cruise for both of us, this is a big disappointment, crown princess should extend a day not cancel a day,

we have planned this cruise for a whole year, found decent child care. We hope it's not Ebola

case:mad:

Here is what someone currently on the Crown reported:

"We are heading home, but we were notified by the Captain on Saturday night that we had a medical emergency on board. The passenger needs to be evacuated off for further treatment, so we diverted to the Marqueses (Nuvi Hiva) Islands, which appeared to be a very beautiful place, about 400 miles south of our route, where the patient was tendered to shore and life flighted to Tahiti for emergency surgery. Rumor has it, that it was a young crew member with acute appendicitis. So, we will be delayed arriving back to LA for about 26 hours...so a full extra day at sea for us, but a shortened cruise for those waiting to board next. Our new expected arrival is 9 am Sunday morning....so we anticipate leaving the ship around noonish.

Phone lines and extra Internet is being set up on the ship for approx 3000 passengers to change their homeward travel arrangements. Lots of stress and lines onboard, many rumors and angry people. We are good since we live local and have no flights..lucky us! So we can sit back and relax.

Princess is helping people that made their flights through them. Everyone else is on their own to change heir own flights. They did say Princess would reimburse any airline change fees. They have also mentioned this will cost upwards of $1 million for Princess for fuel, fees, flights, etc. So sad for all concerned. Luckily, we heard the patient had surgery and is doing better today,

The Captain also just announced, our ship is now infected with several increasing cases of norovirus and CDC sanitation and containment procedure will take place immediately .....we are ok so far, fingers crossed we arrive at the new scheduled time, bearing any other issues or bad weather...

Will keep you updated when we hear more. "

It's a bummer, I am really disappointed about Puerto Vallarta, I knew that would be the port they would cut since it is the furthest but I was hoping not. I, too had to plan childcare & pet care for this 7 day cruise and did not want it cut short either. Now, I have to find and pay for a hotel in LA/Long Beach.

Sorry about your disappointment. It would be impossible for Princess to delay yet another cruise just because you want an extra day, and then they would have to delay the next one and the next one. And no, it's not Ebola.

It's so nice to see your concern about that poor very ill passenger!

And it's nice to know, that in this big bad world of ours, we are in the hands of people who don't second guess for a minute that a million dollar expense is worth it to save a life :D

Thank you for that comment. I've just read this thread and am floored by a few callous and selfish comments. I truly understand the disappointment in having ones plans changed. I understand that your trip may have been planned well in advance and was eagerly anticipated, but stuff happens, it just happens.

'Course they didn't mention that embarking passengers are getting OBC and an FCC for the inconvenience.

I'm sure all involved is happy that they were at least close enough to an island to get the sick person off and not in the middle of the 8 days that it takes to sail back from the South Pacific.

After a couple of cruises, you'll find that stuff happens. I've missed I don't know how many ports because of weather and such.

Totally agree with rpcv77.

What happened to compassion?

Glad to hear that the crew member is doing well.

I would like to think that Princess would do the same for me or family/friend/ fellow passenger in time of need.

I think that there is a lesson for us all here when booking cruises, flights, hotels and transfers, whether or not to book direct, through a TA or independently???.......also do you have the right insurance or are you travelling with no insurance!

I would suspect that the person had a ruptured appendix...if this is true, the person would not have lived until they reached another place where he/she could be operated on safely. It is imperative that that type of surgery be done quickly....it is inconvenient for everyone else....life saving for that person...what if it had be your mother, father, sister or brother. Prospective guys, put it into prospect active. Every time you travel, you run the risk of not getting where you are going at the time you think you will be there....even down to the corner market....be thankful that Princess might just help you out one day too.

It's a passenger and he or she survived surgery... doing well is a big stretch.
